Job summary

Afternow seeks a Senior Backend (AI / Machine Learning) Engineer to design, build, and deploy intelligent systems in production. This fully remote role targets Europe-based candidates, with English required and Spanish a bonus.

You will work across AI, ML, data pipelines, APIs, and cloud services, primarily using Python and Java Spring Boot. Expect 40-hour weeks, CET flexibility, and collaboration with product managers, engineers and clients.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend development experience in Python and Java (Spring Boot).
• Hands-on experience deploying production-grade ML features and data pipelines.
• Strong understanding of data pipelines, model serving, APIs and backend integration.
• Experience with MLOps tools and cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
• Familiarity with microservices architecture and modern backend practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and deploy ML features in production environments.
• Build reliable data pipelines for ML models and analytics.
• Develop internal (gRPC) and external (REST) APIs for AI/ML services.
• Support experimentation, monitoring, and optimization of ML models.
• Collaborate with product, backend, and frontend teams to deliver AI-powered features.
• Own AI/ML capabilities from prototype to production deployment and monitoring.
