Job description

United Robots is a technology company developing autonomous mobile robots for industrial facilities, warehouses, and logistics centres. We create complete solutions encompassing electronics, control systems, autonomous navigation, sensor integration, robot software, and a cloud platform for managing fleets of devices. We are looking for a Robotics Software Engineer specialising in autonomous navigation, motion planning, and mobile robot control. In this role, you will develop systems that enable robots to perform tasks safely and efficiently in dynamic industrial environments.

Responsibilities
  • Developing autonomous navigation systems for mobile robots;
  • Designing and implementing global and local trajectory-planning algorithms;
  • Developing motion controllers and trajectory-tracking algorithms;
  • Developing obstacle-detection and avoidance mechanisms;
  • Optimising robot behaviour around people, forklifts, AGVs, and other robots;
  • Developing costmaps, traversability maps, and environment representations;
  • Adapting navigation parameters to the kinematics and constraints of individual robots;
  • Developing mission, waypoint, zone, and traffic-rule mechanisms;
  • Implementing emergency behaviours and recovery behaviours;
  • Developing navigation for narrow passages, large open spaces, and high-traffic zones;
  • Optimising surface coverage and route planning for cleaning robots;
  • Developing docking mechanisms for charging, water refill, and robot servicing stations;
  • Integrating navigation with localisation, safety sensors, and drive control;
  • Developing components in ROS and ROS 2;
  • Configuring and extending Nav2-based solutions;
  • Preparing test scenarios and navigation-quality metrics;
  • Testing algorithms in simulation and on physical robots;
  • Analysing logs, rosbags, trajectories, and robot-operation events;
  • Diagnosing issues occurring during customer deployments;
  • Collaborating with SLAM, embedded, machine-learning, safety, and fleet-management teams;
  • Preparing technical documentation.
Key objectives of the role
  • Increasing successful mission completion;
  • Reducing stops, deadlocks, and situations requiring operator intervention;
  • Improving movement smoothness and predictability;
  • Reducing travel time and increasing task efficiency;
  • Ensuring safe robot behaviour in dynamic environments;
  • Improving docking success;
  • Developing a shared navigation architecture for different robot models;
  • Preparing the system for multi-robot operation at the same location.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience;
  • Experience developing autonomous navigation systems for mobile robots;
  • Practical knowledge of ROS or ROS 2;
  • Knowledge of Nav2, ROS Navigation Stack, or similar solutions;
  • Good knowledge of C++ and/or Python;
  • Knowledge of motion-planning and graph-search algorithms;
  • Knowledge of local planning and obstacle-avoidance methods;
  • Understanding of mobile robot kinematics;
  • Knowledge of control systems and trajectory tracking;
  • Ability to work with costmaps, LiDAR data, and environment models;
  • Experience analysing the behaviour of physical robots;
  • Very good knowledge of Linux and Git;
  • Ability to diagnose issues using logs, rosbags, and telemetry;
  • Willingness to test software on physical robots;
  • English proficiency sufficient to work confidently with technical documentation.
Nice to have
  • Experience with A*, D*, Dijkstra, RRT, RRT*, TEB, DWA, MPC, or MPPI;
  • Knowledge of Behavior Trees;
  • Experience with differential-drive, Ackermann, or four-wheel-steering robots;
  • Knowledge of complete coverage path planning;
  • Experience with social navigation and human-behaviour modelling;
  • Knowledge of multi-robot traffic-management systems;
  • Experience with Open-RMF, VDA 5050, or similar standards;
  • Knowledge of Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or other simulation environments;
  • Experience integrating LiDARs, cameras, ToF sensors, and safety sensors;
  • Experience with AMR or AGV systems;
  • Knowledge of Docker, CI/CD, and automated testing;
  • Experience deploying robots in industrial and logistics facilities.
What we offer
  • A genuine influence on the behaviour of autonomous robots operating at customer sites;
  • Work on the complete navigation system, from mission planning to motion control;
  • The opportunity to test solutions on physical robots;
  • Access to simulation, sensors, and dedicated testing infrastructure;
  • Work on complex problems found in dynamic industrial facilities;
  • The opportunity to develop multi-robot coordination systems;
  • A high degree of independence and direct cooperation with the technical team;
  • Compensation aligned with your experience and level of responsibility.
