Job description

The opportunity For our research centre in Kraków, Poland, we are looking for a Research Scientist with expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to power electronics development. In this role, you will focus on accelerating design, simulation, control, and validation processes of complex power electronics systems using AI‑driven tools and methodologies. As a part of Hitachi Energy’s global research organization, you will join a dynamic, motivated, and multidisciplinary team where you will contribute to the development of AI‑enabled methods and software workflows that improve how complex power electronics systems such as HVDC, STATCOM, SVC, and grid‑connected converter platforms are designed, optimized, and validated.

You will be based onsite at our Research Center in Kraków, Poland. Strong local ecosystem in the field, combined with global research and business unit interfaces, enables rapid ideation, prototyping, and validation of AI‑driven engineering solutions with real‑world impact.

How You Will Make An Impact
  • Develop AI‑enabled software workflows and engineering methods that enhance power electronics design, simulation, and validation processes.
  • Drive applied research in design automation using AI/ML, optimization algorithms, surrogate modelling, and data‑driven methods.
  • Develop and validate approaches for design space exploration, performance prediction, reliability assessment, and system‑level optimization of power electronic converters.
  • Build AI‑assisted simulation pipelines to accelerate engineering workflows (e.g., automated parameter tuning, model calibration, model order reduction, anomaly/fault detection), integrating ML frameworks with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, and/or PLECS.
  • Support component selection, reliability assessment, and scalability improvements for power electronic systems
  • Partner with local Power Electronics teams in Kraków to ground AI solutions in practical converter and controller design challenges, and with local ML/AI teams to scale robust, reusable methods.
  • Collaborate with global research teams and business units to identify high‑impact opportunities and translate engineering pain points into user‑focused tools and scalable workflows.
  • Work with external partners (universities, research institutes, startups, and industry consortia) to advance joint research initiatives and validate novel approaches.
  • Disseminate results through technical reports, patent applications, and scientific publications.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
Your Background
  • Ph.D. (preferred) or M.Sc. with strong relevant industrial research experience in Electrical Engineering with focus on Power Electronics, Control Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Solid foundation in power electronics and control (e.g., MMCs, grid‑connected converters) and familiarity with system‑level performance and validation considerations.
  • Hands‑on experience applying AI/ML techniques (e.g., supervised/unsupervised learning, optimization, surrogate modelling, reinforcement learning, Bayesian methods) to engineering or physical system problems.
  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and scientific computing libraries.
  • Experience with simulation and modelling tools used in power electronics such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, and/or PLECS, and an ability to connect data‑driven methods with physics‑based models.
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge theory and practice through prototyping and validation in simulation and/or lab environments.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to convey complex technical ideas to both specialists and non‑specialists.
  • Strong analytical problem‑solving mindset and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary, collaborative R&D.
