Responsibilities

Offer Description

We are searching for a part-time Research Assistant (20h per week) for 3 months (November 2026 - January 2027) who will join our research team from the Laboratory of Environmental Chemoinformatics at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Gdansk, Poland, working on topics related to environmental chemistry, chemical risk assessment, computational toxicology and the development and application of in silico methods.

The position involves research activities carried out within the project titled: „Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals” (PARC), conducted in the framework of the Horizon Europe Programme, Grant Agreement no. 101057014.

PARC’s mission is to address current, emerging and novel chemical safety challenges and enabling the transition to the Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA), in line with the European Green Deal’s zero-pollution ambition for a toxic free environment and in particular with the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability Towards a Toxic-Free Environment.

The PARC programme has three main objectives:

• Develop the scientific skills needed to address current and future challenges in chemical safety
• Provide new data, methods and innovative tools to those responsible for assessing and managing the risks of chemical exposure
• Strengthen the networks which bring together actors specialised in the different scientific fields contributing to risk assessment.

Main responsibilities of the succesfull candidate:

• reviewing scientific literature relevant to the research objectives of the PARC project;
• identifying and evaluating available in silico tools for assessing physicochemical properties and (eco)toxicity of chemicals, including tools applicable to chemical risk ranking;
• evaluating experimental datasets for their suitability for the development of predictive models of (eco)toxicity;
• developing algorithms and scripts for building predictive models and facilitating their application to new chemicals;
• developing predictive models of physicochemical properties and biological activities of different groups of chemicals;
• contributing to the development of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) potentially applicable for regulatory purposes;
• presenting research results at scientific conferences and project meetings;
• preparing scientific publications;
• participating in international project meetings and conferences.

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate must:

• hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field;
• have a documented research record in at least one of the following areas: cheminformatics, environmental chemistry, modelling of chemical properties, nanomaterials, or chemical risk assessment;
• have experience in developing and applying QSAR/QSPR models for predicting physicochemical properties, biological activity, toxicity, or parameters relevant to chemical risk assessment;
• have experience with in silico methods, statistical methods and/or machine-learning algorithms applied to chemical, toxicological or ecotoxicological data;
• have experience in modelling and analysing the properties of chemicals and/or nanomaterials, including structure–property and structure–activity relationships;
• have knowledge of chemical hazard assessment, exposure assessment, environmental fate and chemical risk assessment;
• have a documented scientific record including publications in peer-reviewed international journals, preferably including first-author publications;
• demonstrate active participation in scientific activities, including presentations at national and/or international scientific conferences;
• have experience in national and/or international research projects related to cheminformatics, molecular modelling, chemical risk assessment, nanomaterials or chemical safety;
• be able to conduct research independently, prepare scientific publications and work effectively in interdisciplinary research teams;
• have working knowledge of English and Polish sufficient for conducting scientific research, preparing publications and presenting research results.
