Job summary

Speechify is seeking a Team Lead to own core Android product work with a hands-on coding role. You will review code, own features end-to-end, and ensure fast, high-quality releases within our 100% distributed team with no central office.

You'll lead planning, improve reliability, unblock the team, and mentor early-career engineers, collaborating with Product, Design, and Engineering to push Android UI/UX beyond the spec.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work
• Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them
• A track record of building things the rest of your team actually used, not only things that made you faster
• Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond what's outlined in the spec
• Comfort with asking people to change how they work, and living with the friction that follows
• A view on which changes need heavy review and which don't, argued from what the system does
• Product design intuition, user empathy, and the drive to push Android UI/UX further than the spec asks for
• A willingness to work in a fully remote, distributed team environment

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, working closely with our design team — from the decision through to release
• Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features
• Review pull requests and give constructive feedback beyond approval
• Unblock the team when someone is stuck and take a hand-on look
• Coordinate when one build should become the team default
• Keep shared code in working order and consolidate multiple versions
• Lead process changes when needed, not wait for them
• Reduce manual steps to achieve a correct release
• Address recurring problems by changing the underlying setup
• Shift verification left and enable automated checks in QA
• Plan sprints to focus on undecided work, not already clear tasks
• Assess review effort and ensure consistent sign-off
• Participate in cross-functional discussions early to align constraints
• Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA
• Mentor early-career engineers and ensure they have learnable work
