Job description

Requisition Number: 76716

Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. From the depths of the ocean to the farthest reaches of space, our technologies push the boundaries of what’s possible.

How do we do this? With our people. They break through limitations and expectations– not once in a career, but every day. They help move our company, and the world, forward.

At Corning, there are endless possibilities for making an impact. You can help connect the unconnected, drive the future of automobiles, transform at-home entertainment, and ensure the delivery of lifesaving medicines. And so much more.

Come break through with us.

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

We are looking for a highly skilled and innovative R&D Measurement Systems Development Supervisor (m/f) to join our Metrology Engineering team. In this role, you will lead the development, integration, and industrialization of advanced testing solutions for co-packaged optics connectivity.

The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in sub-micron metrology and test systems, as well as hands‑on experience with advanced technologies such as vision-based inspection systems (AOI), interferometers, and precision motion platforms. This position requires end-to-end experience, from early-stage system development and validation through the integration of measurement techniques and transfer into high-throughput manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise a team of experts focused on the development of measurement methods for new processes and products in the field of micro-optics
  • Drive the development, integration, and implementation of metrology solutions for advanced R&D and manufacturing applications
  • Collaborate closely with global research and technology organizations, external suppliers and contractors, and cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams to support the successful transfer of metrology capabilities into production
  • Ensure measurement systems and capabilities align with technical roadmaps, business needs, and future technology directions
  • Stay current with the latest developments in metrology technologies, measurement techniques, and industry best practices
  • Research and assess emerging trends in fiber-optic and micro-optic technologies to identify opportunities for innovation and capability development
  • Support innovation activities through patent filings, scientific publications, and technical presentations
  • Contribute to the development of robust, scalable, and high-throughput measurement systems for manufacturing environments
Requirements
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Optics, Photonics, Physics, Micromechanics, Metrology, Automation, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory role and/or in leading project teams
  • Proven experience in system development, automation, integration, implementation, and scale-up of technical solutions
  • Strong project management skills, including planning timelines, budgets, resource allocation, and execution
  • Experience with sub-micron metrology and advanced measurement systems in R&D or manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with micromechanics, such as piezoelectric stages, hexapods, and precision positioning systems, is an advantage
  • Knowledge of cleanroom ISO standards is considered an asset
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is a plus
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to drive planning and execution effectively
  • High attention to detail and a data-driven approach to problem-solving and decision-making
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in global, cross-functional teams
