The tasks of the person employed in the post-doctoral position will include:

  • Conduct research on theories of argumentation in the texts that make up the project’s primary source corpus, with particular attention to the strategies attributed to good and bad disputants;
  • Contribute to the development of the project’s theoretical framework, e.g., by bringing the early modern theories identified through the research into dialogue with contemporary debates (e.g. on scientific theories and scientific controversies);
  • Work with the other members of the research team on the editing and/or translation of key texts;
  • Prepare interim research reports and academic publications;
  • Present research findings at academic conferences;
  • Communicate the project’s findings to a broader audience, e.g., by contributing to the development and maintenance of the project website, disseminating the research through the media, and co-authoring a report aimed at a wider audience;

Contribute to the administrative and organizational activities associated with the project, including regular project team meetings (remote participation will be possible for most meetings).

Specific Requirements

  • A PhD in the humanities;
  • A research record evidenced by academic publications;
  • International research experience, such as participation in international conferences, research stays or fellowships, or collaboration in international research teams;
  • Advanced proficiency in Latin, demonstrated by a relevant academic degree and/or research and publication record;
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written, including the ability to write to an academic standard;
  • Meeting requirements set forth by the funding agency: (a) PhD received no earlier than January 1, 2014 (exceptions apply in case of longer sick leaves and parental leaves); (b) PhD received from an academic institution other than the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (OR at least a 9-months long research stay at an academic institution abroad during or after PhD studies).

Competences that are welcome (not obligatory):

  • experience working with early modern or medieval texts, particularly on theories of argumentation (including, but not necessarily limited to, the history of epistemology, history of logic, or history of rhetoric);
  • knowledge of the cultural history of Central and Eastern Europe, particularly the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth;

experience working with early printed books and manuscripts.
