Job summary

The City of Kearney is seeking a Police Officer who will report to Police Corporal and operate within a 84-hour bi-weekly schedule. The role pays $25.52 to $31.09 per hour and is non-exempt under the sworn law enforcement classification.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Missouri driver's license.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Missouri POST certification.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to routine, urgent and emergency calls for service, makes arrests, transports prisoners, and serves warrants.
  • Performs preventive patrol and actively enforces laws, statutes, and ordinances.
  • Provides emergency assistance to the injured.
  • Protects accident and/or crime scene to ensure evidence control.
  • Directs and controls traffic to ensure safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of suspicious and/or criminal activities/ persons.
  • Conducts traffic enforcement activities to reduce accidents.
  • Prepares required reports for accidents, arrests, and other incidents.
  • Appears in court to give evidence and testimony as to the facts surrounding cases being tried.
  • Participates in arrest, searches and crowd control.
  • Contacts/events participated in, documented outreach activities, and qualitative feedback)
  • Training and development: completion of required and advanced training. (measured by training logs, certifications obtained, and proof of completion in courses)

Department: Police Department

Salary range: $25.52/hour - $31.09/hour

FLSA status: non-exempt/sworn law enforcement

Objectives
  • Promotes public trust and cooperation with the public.
  • Support investigations at crime scenes when required.
  • Promotes transparency, accountability, compliance, efficiency, and trust within the city and the community through effective communication and excellent and responsive customer service.

  • Proficiency in the safe and appropriate use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, and the community.
  • Proficiency in using email and Office 365.
Education And Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid missouri driver's license.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Missouri Post cCertification.
Work Schedules And Conditions
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in varying, sometimes extreme weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to high-stress and potentially hazardous environments, including crime scenes.
  • May be required to respond to emergency call-outs outside regular working hours. Use of standard law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and firearms.
  • Work schedules will vary based on departmental needs. This position is a full-time role, working 84 hours per bi-weekly pay period.
  • Schedules may include varying shifts or hours depending on operational requirements.

Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather; regularly is required to lift or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; and regularly is exposed to dangerous machinery, exposure to extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and infectious disease when conducting investigations, responding to calls for service, operating police vehicles and other emergency police equipment, making public contact, and working at on-site emergency and crime scenes.
