Job summary

Position Title

Maintenance Technician

Position Summary

The position is a general maintenance position. Responsibilities include the maintenance, minor repair, and up‑keep of plumbing fixtures and electrical devices and appliances in all campus facilities and the immediate grounds. Some minor carpentry work is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform minor repairs and/or replacement of plumbing fixtures, valves, and other devices as required;
  • Perform minor repairs and/or replacement of electrical fixtures, devices, and appliances as required;
  • Perform minor carpentry work as required to repair windows, doors, hardware, screens, and furniture;
  • Provide exemplary customer service to internal and external customers;
  • Observe and report any and all defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on the facilities using the work order system procedure;
  • Assist in coordinating major repairs, painting, and setting up of all facilities within scheduled periods;
  • Communicate, as directed, with administrative staff on functions scheduled that may require special furnishing arrangements and other duties that may be required;
  • Inspect all buildings on a routine basis and assure that deficiencies are corrected;
  • Assist as required and cooperate with all trades people and custodians in the performance of day to day duties and responsibilities.
Required Qualifications

Must have a High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 5 years of related experience.

The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to prioritize effectively, be able to interact in a diverse community, and able to adapt to changing situations. Good oral and written communication skills are required, with the ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, technical procedures and procedure manuals. The ability to speak effectively when interacting with the public and the entire Spelman community is a must.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have beginner skills using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel). The employee must be able to utilize email systems such as Lotus Notes or Outlook.

Must be able to pass a pre‑employment drug test.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to: reach with hands and arms, use hands to handle maintenance supplies and equipment, talk, hear, stand, walk, stoop, climb, or crawl, and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
