Job description

At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

We are seeking experienced Lead Software Engineer, responsible for improving engineering effectiveness across the organization. This role works across multiple engineering teams to establish engineering standards, improve software architecture, build reusable engineering capabilities, and accelerate software delivery.

This is not a people-management role. Success is achieved through technical excellence, collaboration, influence, mentorship, and the ability to build engineering platforms that make the right engineering practices the easiest practices to follow.

This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving organizational engineering challenges, improving developer productivity, and raising the technical capability of an entire engineering organization.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and continuously improve the organization's Developer Platform, including CI/CD automation, reusable GitHub workflows, Golden Path templates, shared libraries, developer tooling, and self-service capabilities.
  • Define, implement, and evolve engineering standards, covering architecture, coding practices, API design, security, observability, release management, and software development lifecycle processes.
  • Build automated guardrails that enforce engineering best practices through quality gates, code analysis, security scanning, branch protection, test coverage, and deployment controls.
  • Support engineering teams with software architecture reviews, solution design, modernization initiatives, and technical decision-making.
  • Mentor engineers through technical coaching, code reviews, architecture discussions, workshops, and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, QA, DevOps, infrastructure, and leadership teams to drive technical alignment and consensus.
  • Continuously improve developer productivity by streamlining workflows, increasing automation, and enhancing the developer experience.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and engineering practices, contributing to technology adoption and innovation across the organization.
Here’s what you’ll need
  • Approx. 10 years of professional software engineering experience, including designing, building, and delivering enterprise-grade software solutions.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Proven software architecture expertise, with deep knowledge of system design, object-oriented principles, architectural patterns, and design trade-offs.
  • Experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple engineering teams and influencing engineering direction without direct organizational authority.
  • Strong background in developer productivity, platform engineering, CI/CD automation, build automation, software quality initiatives, and technical governance.
  • Hands-on experience implementing modern DevOps practices, source control strategies, and software development lifecycle processes, including Git, GitHub Enterprise, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience designing and developing applications using modern Microsoft technologies, including C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, Blazor, and cloud-native solutions on MS Azure (Azure App Services, Azure Functions preferred).
  • Experience working with APIs and integration patterns, including REST and GraphQL.
  • Strong knowledge of relational and non-relational databases such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts, facilitate discussions, build consensus, and create clear technical documentation.
  • Proven experience mentoring engineers, conducting architecture and design reviews, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Experience working in distributed and/or matrixed organizations.
Nice to have
  • Experience with additional programming languages and modern front-end technologies such as Python, TypeScript, and Vue.js.
  • Experience building desktop, cross-platform, or engineering-focused applications using technologies such as MAUI, WPF, or AutoCAD plugin development.
  • Familiarity with application monitoring, observability, and logging solutions, including Sentry and Serilog.
  • Interest in emerging technologies and modern engineering practices, particularly AI-assisted software development and platform engineering.
