The Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences is seeking an MSc student to design and 3D print Moiré structures at macroscopic scale, visualizing atomistic 2D materials. The project aims for numerically optimized search for new large-scale allotropes of 2D materials and explores spectroscopic measurements and viscosity testing for applications.
Eligible candidates should have a Bachelor in biomedical sciences, MSc status by 01/04/2026, and substantial 3D
New design methodology for future 2D materials based on physical and computational rationale
2D materials, built out of a single atomistic layer, are at the moment at the forefront of materials engineering research. They give us realistic chance to create the thinnest possible devices, with unique functional properties. The first material of this class, graphene, has already transformed our thinking about nano-electronics and that has led to a recent Nobel prize in physics. In this project we aim for a numerically optimized search for a new large scale allotropes of 2D materials.
The specific task of the MSc student will be to devise and 3D print Moiré structures in the large scale. Firstly, this will allow to visualize these atomistic structures at the macroscopic scales visible to a bare human eye. Moreover, secondly, there are further important applications of these macroscopic models: spectroscopic methods could potentially allow to measure local strains while viscosity measurements could allow to search for further interesting engineering applications in hydrodynamics. We are looking for a person with a keen interest to develop 3D printing methods that can be applied to model structures at the frontier of materials science.
