Job summary

Hitachi, Ltd. is seeking an experienced R&D Software Architect focused on C++ for performance‑critical systems in Kraków, Poland.

You will lead architecture for real‑time, scalable software across Linux/Windows, collaborating with global teams to ensure reliability and security. You will drive modernization of build systems, code quality, and design reviews while mentoring teams in best practices and modern C++ techniques.

Qualifications

  • University degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in senior technical or architecture roles.
  • Advanced proficiency in modern C++ (C++17/20) with deep understanding of RAII, smart pointers, STL, concurrency, and memory management.
  • Proven experience with multithreading, synchronization primitives, asynchronous I/O and real‑time system design.
  • Proficiency with building systems (CMake, Visual Studio) and cross‑platform development for Windows and Linux.
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices patterns; performance profiling, optimization, and low‑latency design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead system design in areas like multithreading, synchronization, I/O, and latency requirements for real‑time operation.
  • Architect interop layers connecting high‑performance C++ cores to managed runtime services (.NET, RUST) with minimal latency overhead.
  • Drive performance optimization and scalability: profile threading behavior, minimize lock contention, reduce memory allocations in critical paths, ensure predictable latency at scale.
  • Propagate modern programming practices and techniques based on the latest C++ standard.
  • Maintain high code quality through code reviews, unit testing, and adherence to SOLID, KISS, DRY and industry best practices.
  • Mentor development teams on system design, best practices and maintaining code quality in performance‑critical sections.
  • Lead technical architecture reviews, design documentation, and roadmaps for feature development, refactoring initiatives, and legacy code modernization.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and business stakeholders to transform requirements into clear architectural designs.
  • Support strategic technology decisions on dependencies, build tooling, dependency management, and secure software supply chain practices.
  • Maintain cross‑platform support: drive modernization of build systems, ensure consistency across multiple deployment environments, and support Linux/Windows compatibility.
  • Drive Linux development and deployment strategies: architect solutions for Linux environments.
  • Contribute to achieving business goals by designing, developing, and delivering high‑quality software solutions.
  • Continuously enhance existing systems and contribute to the creation of new features.

In this role, you will lead the architecture of scalable, high-performance, and secure software systems built with modern C++ (C++17/20), with a strong focus on real‑time behavior, reliability, and long product lifecycle support.

As an R&D Architect within the Grid Automation domain, you will help shape innovative solutions for the power systems of tomorrow.

You will work closely with global technology teams that bring niche expertise and cutting‑edge capabilities. Your work will directly support the development of real‑time software used in critical infrastructure worldwide software designed for long‑term reliability, high efficiency, and uncompromising security.

  • Experience with Cloud, DevOps, deep cybersecurity expertise, UI/web development.
  • Knowledge of non‑functional requirements (performance, scalability, security).
  • Practical experience developing systems for power grid management and monitoring having familiarity with WAMS/WAMPAC, PMU data, and protection and control applications; understanding of power grid operations and applicable standards; experience with industrial automation systems (SCADA, IED, RTU).
  • Experience with industrial protocols and standards (IEC 61850, IEC-60870-5-104, DNP3, OPC UA, IEEE C37.118).
  • Practical experience working directly with power grid industry clients and exposure to system integration, simulators, or lab environments
  • Proven ability to translate customer requirements into clear technical designs.
  • Solid understanding of numerical methods, signal processing, and control fundamentals and ability to work with high‑frequency, time‑aligned time‑series data
  • Good understanding of power system dynamics and the stability challenges introduced by high penetration of renewables
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to tackle complex technical challenges; effective team player with good communication skills and willingness to learn.
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken).
