AgileEngine is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to build and maintain PHP-based systems powering distributed services. You will apply strong OOP and system design skills to keep APIs secure, scalable, and performant.

This hands-on role suits someone who values clean code and sound engineering fundamentals. You will collaborate with product managers, architects, QA, and support teams, participate in testing, and maintain API documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/SE or equivalent professional experience.
• 2 years of backend engineering in PHP production environments.
• Strong knowledge of OOP, design patterns, algorithms, and data structures.
• Experience building backend systems and service integrations.
• Proficiency in secure API design and auth concepts.
• Experience with MySQL / PostgreSQL and backend architecture basics.
• Familiarity with Git, CI/CD, and containerized environments.
• Ability to debug, optimize, and deliver reliable solutions.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
• Timezone overlap with Western Europe time.
• Willingness to assist during weekend migrations.
• Upper-intermediate English.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend systems, APIs, and integrations.
• Write clean, modular PHP and related frameworks.
• Contribute to distributed systems and microservices.
• Apply OOP principles to extensibility and maintainability.
• Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms.
• Optimize performance with data structures, caching, and profiling.
• Debug, profile, and tune across environments.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Architects, QA, and Support Teams.
• Participate in testing strategies with QA/QE teams.
• Adhere to code quality, security, and scalability standards.
• Participate in peer code reviews and knowledge sharing.
• Maintain API specifications and implementation notes.
• Engage in sprint ceremonies and cross-team demos.
• Ensure compliance with open-source policies.
