Application Reliability Lead (Bill Payments)

Job ID:5740

Welcome to Group Technology, where we pride ourselves on engineering solutions and direct Nordea’s transformation by providing a holistic technological view and structured understanding of the bank, and its surrounding environment to enable the Customer Vision and the Business Strategy.

We are looking for an experienced Application Reliability Lead to take ownership of a portfolio of strategically important payment services, including Request to Pay, our next-generation eInvoice platform, Collection Services API, and SEPA Direct Debit services.

If you are passionate about operational excellence, reliability engineering, modern payment platforms and AI-enabled operations, this role offers a unique opportunity to influence how critical payment products are operated, modernised and evolved for the future.

Nordea is a place where traditions meet tomorrow. We're not just a bank, we're a tech employer on a mission to evolve finance securely and responsibly. Together, we impact millions of people’s daily lives by ensuring they can access our solutions anytime, anywhere, while safeguarding their personal data and wealth. Join us in making an impact on the banking industry.

About our team

Welcome to the Retail & Mobile Payments Service Domain.

Our Service Domain, Retail & Mobile Payments, plays a key role in meeting these expectations by delivering mobile payments, bill payment services and digital wallet solutions across the Nordics. Together, we enable trusted, high-quality payment experiences for millions of customers and businesses.

As an Application Reliability Lead, you will be accountable for the operational health, resilience and lifecycle management of a portfolio of payment applications. Working closely with development teams, operations specialists, architects, vendors and business stakeholders, you will ensure services remain secure, stable, compliant and ready to support future business needs.

This is not a traditional service management role.

As Nordea continues its technology transformation journey, you will help establish new ways of operating where AI-powered insights, automation and engineering-led operations become an integral part of delivering great customer outcomes.

What you'll be doing

  • Taking end-to-end accountability for the operational health and reliability of a portfolio of business-critical payment applications.

  • Driving service resilience, stability and availability through proactive operational management and reliability engineering practices.

  • Partnering closely with development teams to improve observability, operability and system reliability.

  • Defining and monitoring service health indicators, service level objectives and operational performance metrics.

  • Leading incident and problem management activities with a strong focus on root-cause elimination and prevention.

  • Driving application lifecycle management, including upgrades, modernisation and technical debt reduction.

  • Managing application budgets, vendor contracts and operational costs.

  • Ensuring services comply with security, architecture and regulatory requirements.

  • Coordinating external vendors and internal specialists to ensure effective service delivery.

  • Acting as an escalation point during major incidents and service disruptions.

  • Identifying opportunities to automate operational activities and reduce manual support effort.

  • Leveraging AI-assisted tooling and operational insights to detect risks earlier, improve decision-making and optimise operational performance.

  • Helping shape the future operating model for AI-enabled service ownership and reliability management.

This role is located in Helsinki, Finland or Tricity, Poland.

Who you are

At Nordea, we value collaboration, ownership, passion and courage. These qualities are particularly important when operating mission-critical services that customers depend on every day.

To succeed in this role, we believe you:

  • Take ownership and care deeply about service quality and customer outcomes.

  • Have a strong engineering mindset and enjoy understanding how complex systems behave in production.

  • Are motivated by solving systemic problems rather than treating symptoms.

  • Enjoy collaborating across business, operations and engineering communities.

  • Can make sound decisions under pressure while maintaining a long-term improvement perspective.

  • Are curious about emerging technologies, automation and AI-enabled operations.

  • Enjoy improving processes, reducing complexity and increasing reliability.

  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Your experience and background

Required:

  • Experience maintaining/managing business-critical applications or services within banking, payments or financial services.

  • Strong knowledge of application management, ITIL and service management disciplines.

  • Experience working with incident, problem, change and risk management.

  • Solid software engineering background and ability to engage confidently with developers and architects.

  • Experience operating and supporting distributed business-critical systems.

  • Experience driving operational stability, resilience and service improvement initiatives.

  • Strong understanding/first hand experience of transitioning from new product development into operational mode.

  • Experience in service restoration or has been part of such drills.

  • Understanding of monitoring, observability and production support practices.

  • Experience working with vendors and external partners.

  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.

  • Fluent English, both written and spoken.

Good to have:

  • Experience with Site Reliability Engineering practices and reliability-focused operating models.

  • Experience defining and managing SLIs, SLOs and operational performance measures.

  • Knowledge of cloud platforms and modern infrastructure technologies.

  • Experience with automation, AIOps or AI-assisted operational tooling.

  • Experience managing application budgets and vendor contracts.

  • Knowledge of payment services, direct debit solutions, digital invoicing platforms or real-time payments.

  • Understanding of security, compliance and regulatory requirements within financial services.
