Job description

Overview

The Aga Khan University was founded in 1983 as Pakistan’s first private university. Aga Khan University is a not-for-profit institution and an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network. Starting in 2000, the University expanded to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom and Afghanistan. AKU began life as a health-sciences university.

Despite global TB control efforts being implemented over the last 25 years, the disease remains a global public health threat with 9.9 million new cases and 1.3 million deaths estimated in 2020. One of the key high-risk groups within the TPT target comprises household contacts of pulmonary TB patients (index TB patients). To date, the global implementation of this intervention has been poor. In the three years between 2018 and 2020, 1.2 million (29% of target) household contacts aged < 5 years and 0.32 million other household contacts (1.6% of target) received TPT: this amounts to 6.3% of all household contacts. We believe that the “7-1-7” target can be adapted to household contact investigation in the context of TB control efforts, and thus enable household contact screening and initiation of TPT or active TB treatment to be timely and efficient.

Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Medicine.

This is a closed-ended position for 4 months.

Responsibilities

• ensure smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and field related activities
• liaison with PI and research coordinator for study related activities
• do home visits, collect information, record interview and log in the system
• identify eligible participants and administer informed consent
• facilitate meetings among the research teams and train research staff on research, interviewing and proper data collection skills
• manage data, complete CRFs/ Queries resolution and logging participant’s information
• assist PI and study coordinator in submitting reports i.e., CRFs, data quality reports etc.
• follow and ensure field implementation of project related SOPs and guidelines as defined in the research project
• prepare and present periodic project related activity reports.

Qualifications

• at least a Graduate (bachelor’s in science preferred)
• preferably research experience of 6-12 months
• ability to multitask several projects
• excellent team player
• basic research and good interpersonal skills, particularly communication skills
• good command over the use of computer applications, particularly MS Office
• resilience and ability to cope-up with work pressure and meet stringent timelines.
