Job summary

Smart Working seeks a Senior ML Engineer to build and modernise an AI platform with a strong focus on productionising NLP and generative AI systems. You will develop ML components, pipelines, and observable infrastructure to simplify deployment and monitoring of models.

You will work on end‑to‑end ML workflows, including evaluation, grounding checks, and guardrails, with emphasis on real‑time and batch workloads. A remote‑first environment enables global collaboration.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional AI/ Machine Learning experience with production background.
• 5+ years of professional MLOps experience.
• At least 2+ years of real Applied AI experience, beyond basic experiments.
• Strong Python proficiency; Python is the core language for this role.
• Experience productionising and deploying AI/ML applications and models.
• Solid understanding of Applied AI/ML and MLOps, not just research.
• Hands-on experience with model evaluation and setting quality criteria.
• Familiar with generative AI/LLMs and evaluation concerns like grounding.
• Experience with RAG and other applied AI techniques.
• Building observable ML systems with logging/monitoring/telemetry.

Responsibilities

• Refactor, modernise and productionise existing ML models and Applied AI capabilities.
• Build new ML components and modular production‑ready systems.
• Develop production ML applications and supporting services using Python.
• Create reliable ML pipelines for model integration, evaluation, deployment and operation.
• Design resilient ML workflows with error handling and retries.
• Automate model evaluation pipelines using gold datasets and quality thresholds.
• Evaluate different model types including generative AI and classification.
• Implement guardrails to assess grounding and hallucinations in outputs.
• Apply RAG and other Applied AI techniques where appropriate.
• Develop model and data provenance for auditability and reproducibility.
• Integrate third‑party AI APIs and adapters.
• Establish observability and telemetry for model behavior and costs.
• Support labelling and maintenance of golden datasets for evaluation.
• Ensure safe deployment practices with testing and fail‑safes.
• Provide backend engineering support for ML components and integration.
