Job summary

SMEC in Pakistan is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Gate Design Engineer to join our team for a major barrage rehabilitation project. You will assess, design and rehabilitate mechanical gate systems, hoists and related equipment to deliver safe and practical solutions.

The ideal candidate has 15+ years in mechanical design for dams or hydraulic infrastructure, with expertise in radial/vertical-lift gates, NDT/condition assessment and familiarity with BS, ASTM and EN standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience in mechanical design or rehabilitation of gates and dam infrastructure.
• At least 5 years designing or maintaining gates, hoists, and mechanical equipment for hydraulic structures.
• Experience with radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, and embedded parts.
• Familiar with BS, ASTM, and EN standards; MDB-funded projects desirable.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct condition assessments of barrage gates, pocket gates, head regulator gates, hoists and equipment.
• Review drawings, maintenance records, and inspection results to identify rehabilitation needs.
• Assess and design radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions and seals.
• Develop refurbishment options and prepare mechanical designs, drawings, specs and BOQs.
• Support procurement, fabrication inspections, testing and commissioning.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team on safety and detailed design reports.

The role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical (Gate) Design Engineer to join our team for a key barrage rehabilitation project. The role will involve the assessment, design, and rehabilitation of mechanical gate systems, hoists, and associated equipment, supporting the project team in delivering safe, reliable, and practical solutions.

• Conduct condition assessments of barrage gates, pocket gates, head regulator gates, hoists, and associated mechanical equipment.
• Review existing drawings, maintenance records, operating history, and inspection results to identify mechanical condition and rehabilitation requirements.
• Assess and design radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts, and associated mechanical components.
• Develop rehabilitation, refurbishment, and replacement options and prepare mechanical designs, drawings, specifications, and BOQs.
• Support technical specifications, bidding documents, procurement, contractor submissions, fabrication inspections, testing, and commissioning.
• Provide technical input to barrage safety, feasibility, detailed design, and other project reports, working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team.

You will bring proven experience in mechanical engineering design and rehabilitation, with strong knowledge of hydraulic gate systems and associated equipment, along with good communication and teamwork skills.

Suitable applicants will have/be:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree is an advantage.
• Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 5 years in the design, rehabilitation, or maintenance of gates, hoists, and mechanical equipment for dams, barrages, or major hydraulic infrastructure.
• Experience with radial/vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts, and NDT/condition assessment.
• Good knowledge of relevant international standards, including BS, ASTM, and EN.
• Experience with World Bank or other MDB-funded infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
• Good communication, documentation, coordination, and teamwork skills.
