Job summary

The New York State Library, part of the NYSED Office of Cultural Education, seeks a Director of the Regent Joseph E. Bowman, Jr. Research Library to lead a large multidisciplinary staff and guide strategic priorities and initiatives.

The role focuses on advancing digitization, public service, and access, while shaping the library’s future through partnerships and innovative strategies. Albany-based leadership with relocation negotiation may apply.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited institution.
• 7 years of post‑degree professional library experience.
• 3+ years of leadership experience in a research library, academic library, archive, or similar knowledge organization.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic, administrative, and operational leadership for all aspects of the Research Library, including collections, services, programs, staff, facilities, and resources.
• Serve as a strategic partner to the State Librarian, contributing to broader library strategy, policy, planning, partnerships, and initiatives.
• Lead and develop a large, multidisciplinary organization with senior managers and professional staff.
• Set and execute an ambitious agenda for modernization and future direction of the Research Library.
• Direct the management, development, preservation, and long‑term stewardship of the Research Library’s collection of more than 20 million items.
• Advance digitization, digital preservation, and technology to expand reach and access.
• Develop and oversee the Research Library’s budget, operations, facilities, and resources.
• Build strategic partnerships with government agencies, libraries, educational institutions, and cultural organizations.
• Collaborate with executive leadership to advance shared priorities and initiatives.
