Job summary

Sui Southern Gas Company Limited is seeking a Law graduate with 3 years of relevant experience and Bar enrollment to strengthen its Legal Department in Karachi. The role focuses on prosecuting and defending suits to safeguard the company’s interests, coordinating with external counsel, preparing opinions, and managing legal risk.

The successful candidate will draft and vet legal documents, liaise with internal departments, and represent the company in court when required, ensuring compliance

Qualifications

• Law graduate from HEC-recognized university with 3 years of relevant experience and 1 year of Bar Enrollment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in gathering amendments to various laws, rules and regulations and present to supervisor for review.
• Coordinate with Head Office departments to collect documents, follow up on suits or other matters requiring Legal input.
• Prepare initial drafts on legal issues/cases based on existing laws, highlighting salient points affecting SSGC.
• Provide case details and supporting documents to external counsel and present the company’s legal perspective.
• Assist in preparation and execution of Vakalatnama for appointment of legal counsel.
• Coordinate with external counsel to initiate and follow up lawsuits involving the company.
• Develop and review draft briefs, replies, para-wise comments, opinions and supporting papers to ensure SSGC’s viewpoint is reflected.
• Represent SSGC at court hearings when required.
• Participate in preparing, vetting, publishing and serving legal notices; seek feedback from relevant departments.
• Assist in vetting legal documents and provide input for risk analysis and impact on SSGC.
• Represent the company’s stance before arbitrators or in dispute settlement discussions.
• Maintain relationships with court officials for document copies, filings and procedural formalities.
• Represent SSGC during court hearings in important matters.
• Provide updates on ongoing cases to Public Accounts Committee members during meetings.
• Assist in preparing status of suits and safeguarding the company’s interests at all levels.
• Generate periodic risk-related reports for management.
• Study court decisions and advise on possible effects on operations or pending suits.
• Advise seniors on changes in laws and implications for the company.
• Guide and support junior staff in drafting and reviewing pleadings.
• Comply with risk management framework and participate in risk activities across the organization.
• Identify, report, record and manage key risks in a timely manner.
• Receive training in risk management.
• Perform any other work as assigned by supervisor.

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to carry out activities related to prosecution and defending in law suits required to protect the company's interests.

Job Responsibilities

• Assist in gathering amendments to various laws, rules and regulations made by federal, provincial and other statutory bodies from time to time and present to immediate supervisor for review.
• Coordinate with SSGC departments at the Head Office to collect the necessary documents, follow up on law suits or finalization of other matters requiring input from the Legal department.
• Prepare an initial draft regarding the legal view on referred issues / cases / queries primarily related to litigation matters based on existing laws, rules, regulations and related research highlighting salient points of interest that may adversely or otherwise impact SSGC.
• Provide details of the case along with the supporting documents to the external counsel and share the company’s legal perspective in order to proceed with the litigation.
• Assist in the preparation and execution of “Vakalatnama” for appointment of legal counsel.
• Assist in coordination with the legal counsel to initiate and follow up of law suits filed by the company or in suits where the company is a respondent.
• Coordinate with the external counsel in developing and reviewing appropriate draft, brief, reply, para-wise comments, opinions and supporting papers. Ensure that SSGC’s viewpoint is correctly presented and its interest safeguarded on legal matters.
• Where required, represent SSGC at the hearings of law suits.
• Participate in the preparation, vetting, publication and service of legal notices in various matters pertaining to the company.
• Seek feedback and clarification from relevant departments as and when required to determine company’s stance.
• Assist in vetting the referred legal documents and drafts as the case may be and provide paragraph-wise input in view of adequate risk analysis and impact on SSGC.
• Assist in the representation of the company’s point of view before any arbitrator or in any discussions relating to the settlement of disputes out of court.
• Maintain effective working relationship with the officials of various courts in order to obtain copies of documents, filing of suits or other documents and the smooth execution of procedural formalities.
• In important matters or as deemed appropriate, represent SSGC during court hearings.
• Provide update on the ongoing cases to members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) during their periodic meetings.
• Assist in preparation of the status of law suits pertaining to the company and ensure that effective steps are being taken to safeguard the company’s interests at all levels.
• Generate periodic reports for the management on potential legal and litigation risks.
• Study reports on the decisions taken by superior courts on various legal issues, evaluate the probable effect on the company’s operations or the law suits pending in courts and advise the departmental management on the options available.
• Advise the departmental seniors on changes or amendments in laws and rules along with the applicable implications for the company, if any.
• With reference to above matters, guide and support junior legal staff in developing initial drafts / replies / pleadings etc. and review accordingly.
• Comply with the risk management framework.
• Participate actively in risk management activities across the organization.
• Ensure that key risks are identified, reported, recorded and managed in a timely manner.
• Receive appropriate training in risk management.
• Perform any other work assigned by immediate supervisor.
