Introduction:

Aga Khan University, chartered in 1983 as Pakistan’s first private international university, is committed to the provision of education, research, and health care of international standard relevant to Pakistan and the region. The affiliated Aga Khan University Hospital has well‑equipped investigative services and provides state‑of‑the‑art clinical facilities. AKUH is the first hospital in Pakistan to be awarded the prestigious Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) for practicing the highest internationally recognized healthcare standards.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Aga Khan University is a dynamic academic center which serves the diagnostic needs of the country through its clinical laboratory services that spreads across Pakistan. AKUH’s Clinical Laboratory is College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited and caters to the need of the entire country through its tertiary lab at the main campus and 300+ specimen collection units and 13 stat labs across Pakistan. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine consists of five major sections, namely Chemical Pathology, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. Each section is academically driven and is highly engaged in research and undergraduate, postgraduate teaching and training.

The Section of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine consists of three subsections: Routine & Special Hematology, Haemostasias/Thrombosis & Transfusion Medicine. The section strives to provide the highest standard of hematological care with state‑of‑the‑art laboratory employing up‑to‑date techniques such as Hematology Automation, Inherited Thromophilia testing, and transfusion medicine services which caters to in‑hospital transfusion requests and four secondary hospitals as well. The section receives referrals for Hematology diagnostic investigation from all over Pakistan. The residents have daily hands‑on practical training during routine daily sign‑out with consultants. They are encouraged to do research and get papers published in peer reviewed journals under the supervision of the sectional faculty.

  • Reporting and interpretation of all tests being performed in the Hematology section. To participate in institutional CME and public awareness program.
  • To participate in departmental administrative committee assigned by section head/Dept chairperson. Actively participate in quality audits and initiatives such as college of American Pathologist (CAP), Joint commission international accreditation (JCIA) and others.
  • To participate in sectional/ Departmental/ Institutional/ National and International meetings/ conferences/ sessions/ workshops etc.
Requirements:
  • Candidates must have an MBBS degree with FCPS/FRCPath/American Board certified or equivalent.
  • Must have training as a fellow/ equivalent for a minimum of 4 years in reputable institution, and/or a diploma in the appropriate field.
