About the Role:
Forte is transforming global access to education, and we're looking for a sharp, experienced, and hands-on Senior Backend Developer to help build and scale our core platform. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, writes clean and reliable code, and is passionate about building systems that create real-world impact.
You'll work closely with our Founder/CEO and cross-functional team to design, develop, and maintain backend services that power our global learning platform. This is a hands-on role where you'll shape critical technical decisions, work with modern serverless infrastructure, and collaborate with a capable backend and frontend team delivering a React web app styled with Tailwind CSS.
You'll be responsible for building and maintaining Node.js APIs, managing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring that our backend systems are scalable, secure, and performant. Your work will directly support our ability to deliver a seamless, stable experience to learners and partners around the world.
Core responsibilities include:
- Backend Development: Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs using Node.js to support our education platform.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Build on serverless AWS and Firebase services (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway, S3, Firebase Functions, Firestore) to deliver a robust, scalable backend.
- CI/CD Pipelines: Manage and enhance GitHub Actions pipelines to enable seamless and automated deployments.
- Collaboration: Work closely with frontend engineers to ensure tight integration between the backend and the React web app.

Experience:
Minimum of 5 - 8 years experience as a backend developer or in a similar software engineering role within SaaS, technology, education, or related sectors. Proven track record of designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend systems, with experience collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.
Node.js Expertise:
Strong experience designing and developing APIs with Node.js.
Cloud Serverless:
Familiarity with AWS Lambda, Firebase Functions, DynamoDB and Firestore.
Frontend Collaboration:
Understanding of React and Tailwind CSS to effectively support the frontend team.
NoSQL Databases:
Experience working with DynamoDB, Firestore, or Cosmos DB.
CI/CD Pipelines:
Proficiency with GitHub Actions for setting up and maintaining deployment pipelines.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Work Hours: Comfortable working Australian business hours.
Self-Starter:
Takes initiative, works independently, and stays focused in a remote-first environment. Capable of managing multiple priorities without heavy oversight.
Cultural Sensitivity:
Comfortable working with culturally diverse teams. Experience collaborating with teams in the global teams is highly valued.
