The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Baños, Philippines, invites applications for a Scientist I in Quantitative Economics and Data Science. The role provides strategic analytical leadership to advance IRRI’s 2025–2030 strategy, guiding foresight, market intelligence, and ex-ante impact assessments to inform R&D investment prioritization.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Under the supervision of the Principal Scientist, the Scientist I for Quantitative Economics and Data Science will provide strategic analytical leadership in the Inclusive Markets and Value Chains Research Unit to advance IRRI’s 2025–2030 Strategy and CGIAR Science Programs. The role drives foresight, market intelligence, and ex-ante impact assessment to guide technology targeting and R&D investment prioritization. Working in close collaboration with interdisciplinary research teams, technology partners, and value chain and policy stakeholders, the position leads the design and application of advanced quantitative tools that generate decision-relevant evidence for value chain upgrading and food system transformation.
This role requires a strong interdisciplinary foundation at the intersection of economics, data science, and food systems, with emphasis on AI/ML-enabled analytics, foresight modelling (nutrition and health, climate and environment, poverty and livelihoods, gender and social inclusion), and lean data ecosystems. By integrating social science insights with technological innovation and policy engagement, the Quantitative Economist-Data Scientist strengthens IRRI’s and CGIAR’s capacity to deliver scalable intelligence that informs investment decisions, accelerates innovation, and supports inclusive, sustainable agrifood system transformation.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and is open for international applications.
