The Role

C9 is looking for a senior, hands-on QA Automation Consultant / Test Automation Architect to help us establish a standardised, repeatable and practical test automation capability across our software delivery teams.

This is primarily an internal capability-building role, not a role dedicated to one client project. The initial focus will be to help C9 define and implement the right testing frameworks, tooling standards, processes, templates and training so our developers and QA team members can apply consistent automated testing practices across future projects.

You will work with our team to assess our current approach, recommend fit-for-purpose tooling, build reusable framework patterns, document clear standards, and train others to apply them. The role will cover layered automation across unit testing, mock/service testing, API testing, component testing, UI/E2E testing, and load/performance testing.

There may be occasional involvement in client projects where your expertise is required, but the core purpose of this fixed-term role is to uplift C9's internal delivery capability. After the initial fixed-term engagement, there may be an opportunity to continue with C9 on a casual, contract or project-by-project basis as testing needs arise.

Responsibilities

• Assess C9's current QA automation approach and identify practical improvement opportunities.
• Define standard testing tools, frameworks and patterns for use across C9 projects.
• Create a layered test automation framework covering:
• Unit tests
• Mock / service tests
• API and integration tests
• UI / end-to-end tests
• Load and performance tests
• Smoke/regression validation in CI/CD pipelines
• Establish recommended tooling and framework choices across our main technology stacks.
• Create reusable templates, examples, documentation and implementation guidance.
• Help define practical processes for when and how each testing layer should be used.
• Support standardisation across .NET / Microsoft projects, including C#, .NET, ASP.NET, SQL Server, Azure DevOps and Azure-hosted applications.
• Support appropriate approaches for PHP and open-source projects, including Laravel or similar environments.
• Integrate testing patterns into Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD workflows.
• Train and mentor developers, QA team members and delivery leads so the approach can be adopted consistently.
• Help C9 avoid fragile, one-off automation scripts by creating maintainable frameworks that delivery teams can understand and extend.
• Provide occasional project-based support for client engagements where deeper QA automation expertise is required.

What we're looking for

• Extensive hands-on experience designing and implementing test automation frameworks, not just executing test cases.
• Proven experience implementing layered test automation across multiple environments, ideally across 4+ separate companies, products, projects or client contexts.
• Strong background in the .NET / Microsoft testing ecosystem, including tools such as:
• xUnit, NUnit or MSTest
• Moq, NSubstitute or similar mocking frameworks
• Playwright, Selenium or comparable UI automation tools
• Azure DevOps pipelines and test reporting
• Experience designing and implementing test automation across:
• Unit testing
• API/integration testing
• Mocking and service virtualisation
• UI/E2E testing
• Load and performance testing
• Experience testing APIs and services using tools/frameworks such as:
• Postman / Newman
• REST clients
• Pact
• WireMock.NET
• Testcontainers
• Experience implementing load and performance testing using tools such as:
• JMeter
• k6
• Locust
• Playwright-based performance checks where appropriate
• Comfortable working across PHP and open-source projects, including frameworks such as PHPUnit, Pest, Codeception or similar.
• Actual experience designing and implementing automated tests that fit into CI/CD, release gates, regression packs, deployment validation and delivery quality.
• Ability to design standards and frameworks that are pragmatic, maintainable and realistic for small-to-mid-sized delivery teams.
• Strong documentation and training capability — this role requires you to enable others, not just build solutions yourself.
• Ability to communicate testing strategy clearly to developers, QA team members, project coordinators and management.

Bonus (Nice to Have)

• Experience creating test automation standards across a software consultancy, digital agency, systems integrator or multi-project delivery environment.
• Experience training or mentoring development/QA teams in automation practices.
• Experience with Azure PaaS, Azure App Service, Azure SQL, Azure Functions, Service Bus or API Management.
• Experience with React, Angular or Vue component testing.
• Experience with accessibility testing, security testing, dependency scanning or static analysis.
• Experience with Azure Test Plans, Jira, Zephyr, AIO Tests, TestRail or similar test management tools.
• ISTQB or equivalent certification is useful, but practical framework implementation experience matters more.

This is an opportunity to shape how C9 approaches automated testing across our delivery portfolio. You will not simply be joining to write tests for one project — you will help define the standards, tools, frameworks and training that our teams can reuse across many future projects.

C9 supports remote-first delivery, so the role is well suited to someone who is highly autonomous, organised and effective working from home.

Working Arrangements

Remote; must be available during Australian Business Hours (AEST). Tools and equipment provided per company policy.

This is intended as a fixed-term capability uplift engagement focused on C9's internal QA automation standards, tooling, process and training.

The initial engagement will focus on building the foundations: recommended tooling, framework templates, process guidance, training material and adoption support.

After the initial engagement, there may be an opportunity to continue with C9 on a casual, contract or project-by-project basis, particularly where client projects require specialist QA automation support.

This role is remote / work from home, with limited need for travel.
