Job summary

Velarc Sciences is seeking a hands-on Principal Systems Engineer to lead system integration across a medical-device platform. You will own critical architecture and interface decisions across mechanical, electrical, sensing, software, controls, safety, and human-factors workstreams.

During the initial 90 days you will establish the system baseline, prioritize significant risks, and deliver a focused technical plan for continued development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
• Approximately 10 or more years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including meaningful medical-device or similarly regulated product-development experience.
• Demonstrated experience integrating a complex electromechanical product across hardware and software disciplines.
• Experience moving a medical device or comparable regulated product from subsystem development into an integrated and testable system.
• Hands-on experience with physical hardware, sensors, data-acquisition systems, and bench instrumentation.
• Experience with system requirements, interface management, design controls, risk management, traceability, and verification planning.
• Working knowledge of FDA design controls, ISO 13485/QMSR, and ISO 14971.
• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly across engineering, clinical, executive, and external-partner teams.
• Ability to participate onsite in Irvine during critical integration and test periods.

Responsibilities

• Own system architecture, interface definitions, and significant cross-functional technical decisions.
• Translate product and user needs into clear, testable system requirements and engineering constraints.
• Lead technical tradeoffs across hardware, software, sensing, controls, safety, and human-interface considerations.
• Define and maintain mechanical, electrical, power, data, timing, and safety interfaces.
• Guide hands-on integration, bench troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and technical risk reduction.
• Ensure that sensing, control, and data subsystems operate as a coordinated and auditable system.
• Partner with mechanical, electrical, software, industrial-design, clinical, quality, regulatory, and supplier contributors.
• Establish lean, development-stage-appropriate practices for requirements, risk management, design review, configuration control, traceability, and verification readiness.
• Provide clear technical recommendations to company leadership and translate decisions into focused engineering execution.

Education
