The Pipe Fitter is responsible for the installation, inspection, repair, modification, and maintenance of piping systems, utility lines, and related equipment used in food manufacturing operations.
The position ensures that piping systems supporting production processes, utilities, sanitation, and facility operations are operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety standards, quality requirements, and company procedures.
The Pipe Fitter supports continuous production operations by preventing leaks, minimizing downtime, and ensuring reliable flow of water, steam, compressed air, gases, and other approved process utilities.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
A. Piping Installation and Fabrication
- Install, assemble, modify, and repair piping systems used in food manufacturing facilities.
- Perform pipe cutting, threading, bending, fitting, alignment, and fabrication activities.
- Install piping supports, valves, fittings, clamps, and related accessories.
- Fabricate and assemble piping components according to approved drawings, layouts, and specifications.
- Perform pipe welding, brazing, or mechanical joining methods as required.
- Ensure proper routing, slope, drainage, and accessibility of piping systems.
- Assist in installation and commissioning of new equipment and utility systems.
B. Maintenance and Repair Activities
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on piping systems and utility lines.
- Inspect pipes, joints, valves, fittings, and connections for:
- Leakage
- Corrosion
- Damage
- Pressure issues
- Abnormal conditions
- Troubleshoot piping problems and perform necessary repairs.
- Replace defective valves, gaskets, fittings, pipes, and other components.
- Conduct pressure testing, leak testing, and system checks after repairs.
- Ensure repaired systems are safe and ready for operation before turnover to Production.
C. Food Manufacturing Utility System Support
Maintain and support piping systems related to:
- Process water supply
- Potable water lines
- Steam distribution systems
- Compressed air systems
- Chilled water systems
- Cooling systems
- Drainage and wastewater systems
- Cleaning and sanitation systems
- Other facility utility systems
Ensure utility systems meet operational, safety, and sanitation requirements.
D. GMP and Food Safety Responsibilities
- Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), sanitation procedures, and food safety policies.
- Perform maintenance activities without compromising product quality and safety.
- Prevent contamination risks during piping installation and repair activities.
- Ensure tools, materials, and equipment are properly controlled when working in production areas.
- Use approved materials suitable for food manufacturing applications.
- Ensure piping materials and components comply with required food safety standards.
- Maintain proper housekeeping after completion of work.
- Prevent foreign material contamination by properly managing:
- Pipe cuttings
- Welding residue
- Tools and spare parts
E. Preventive Maintenance Compliance
- Follow approved preventive maintenance schedules and work orders.
- Conduct regular inspection of piping systems and utilities.
- Record completed maintenance activities accurately.
- Document:
- Work performed
- Parts replaced
- Equipment condition
- Findings and recommendations
- Report recurring problems and recommend corrective actions.
F. Safety Responsibilities
- Follow company safety policies, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and permit requirements.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow safe work practices when handling:
- Pressurized systems
- Hot steam lines
- Chemicals
- Confined spaces
- Elevated work areas
- Maintain safe work conditions and immediately report hazards.
- Ensure tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
