Job Summary
An inventory clerk is responsible for managing, tracking, and maintaining a company’s inventory to ensure accurate stock levels and smooth operations.
Core Responsibilities
Inventory Management: Inventory clerks monitor stock levels, track the movement of goods in and out of warehouses or stores, and ensure items are stored in their proper locations. They perform regular audits and cycle counts to maintain accurate records and prevent shortages or overstocking.
Receiving and Inspecting Goods: Clerks receive incoming shipments, verify quantities and quality, and report any discrepancies, damages, or unusable items. They update records in inventory management systems and coordinate with suppliers or freight carriers as needed.
Order Processing and Shipping: They pick, pack, and prepare orders for shipment, ensuring products are correctly labeled, secured, and delivered on time. Clerks may also determine shipping methods, routes, and rates, and coordinate with other staff involved in handling goods.
Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintaining accurate inventory records is critical. Clerks update databases, reconcile discrepancies, and generate reports on stock levels, shortages, and damages. They may also track shipment data, including weight, charges, and space availability.
Collaboration and Coordination: Inventory clerks work closely with purchasing, logistics, sales, and warehouse teams to align inventory with business needs. They may train new employees, supervise less experienced clerks, and ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies.
Additional Duties: Depending on the industry, clerks may manage raw materials, stock showroom floors, maintain cleanliness of work areas, operate warehouse equipment, and use ERP or WMS systems to manage inventory efficiently.
