Job description

Feeding and Watering:
  • Provide daily feed and clean water to poultry, ensuring proper nutrition.
  • Monitor the quantity and quality of food and water to maintain the health and growth of the birds.
Cleaning and Sanitation:
  • Clean and maintain poultry housing areas, including removing waste, bedding, and litter.
  • Ensure a clean and sanitary environment to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure bird health.
  • Sanitize feeding equipment, water systems, and any other materials used in poultry care.
Monitoring Poultry Health:
  • Observe the behavior and health of the birds daily, looking for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior.
  • Assist in administering medication or vaccines as directed by farm supervisors or veterinarians.
  • Report any health concerns or abnormalities to the farm manager or veterinarian promptly.
Egg Collection and Handling:
  • Collect eggs from poultry pens and ensure they are clean, intact, and safely stored.
  • Handle eggs carefully to prevent damage and contamination.
  • Maintain accurate records of egg production and inventory.
Assisting with Poultry Transportation:
  • Help in moving poultry from one location to another, such as from the poultry house to a processing facility or for health checks.
  • Assist with loading and unloading birds as needed, ensuring humane handling during transportation.
Maintaining Equipment and Facilities:
  • Help in the maintenance of poultry equipment, including feeding systems, water systems, and lighting.
  • Ensure that poultry housing areas are in good condition and repair minor issues as needed.
Qualifications and Training:
  • Basic Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
  • Experience with Animals: Previous experience working with livestock, even on a personal or volunteer basis, is highly preferred but not always required. Experience on farms, ranches, or in animal care roles is an asset.
  • Farm or Agricultural Training: Some employers may prefer candidates with formal education in animal science, agriculture, or a related field, although on-the-job training is common.
Physical Requirements:
  • Physical Stamina: The role involves physically demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, walking, and standing for long periods. Livestock helpers should be able to carry heavy loads (e.g., feed bags, equipment) and work in physically strenuous conditions.
  • Manual Dexterity and Strength: Livestock helpers must be able to handle animals safely and use tools and equipment effectively. Physical strength is often necessary to move animals, clean pens, or manage farm equipment.
  • Comfort with Outdoor Work: The job requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, rain, cold) and in environments that may be dusty, dirty, or muddy.
