Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION: HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and comprehensive repair of heavy-duty machinery used in construction, and logistics. This equipment includes excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, dump trucks, cranes, and forklifts. The primary objective is to maximize fleet uptime, ensure peak mechanical efficiency, and eliminate safety hazards by troubleshooting complex hydraulic, pneumatic, diesel engine, and electronic control systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

Diagnostics & Advanced Troubleshooting

• System Diagnostics: Utilize computerized diagnostic laptops, scanners, pressure gauges, and flow meters to isolate faults in engines, transmissions, and electrical systems.

• Schematic Interpretation: Read and interpret complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical blueprints to trace system faults and identify failing components.

• Failure Analysis: Inspect worn or broken parts (e.g., pistons, pumps, seals, gears) to determine the root cause of the failure and prevent future occurrences.

Heavy-Duty Repairs & Overhauls

• Engine & Transmission Overhauls: Disassemble, repair, and rebuild heavy-duty diesel engines, fuel injection systems, turbochargers, and power-train assemblies.

• Hydraulic System Repair: Repair or replace high-pressure hydraulic pumps, control valves, cylinders, hoses, and steering/braking mechanisms.

• Undercarriage & Structural Work: Inspect, repair, and replace tracks, rollers, sprockets, suspension systems, and attachments (e.g., buckets, blades, booms); perform torch cutting and arc welding when necessary.

• Brake & Steering Maintenance: Service and adjust heavy-duty air brakes, wet-disc braking systems, and articulated steering mechanisms.

Preventative Maintenance & Safety Operations

• Routine Servicing: Perform scheduled preventive maintenance checks based on machine operating hours (e.g., changing engine oils, hydraulic fluids, filters, and greasing joints).

• Pre- & Post-Shift Inspections: Conduct rigorous walk-around inspections to monitor tire wear, track tension, structural cracks, and fluid leaks before equipment hits the field.

• Safety & LOTO Compliance: Strictly enforce Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) protocols, handle hazardous fluids (coolants, oils) safely, and safely operate shop cranes and overhead hoists.

Coordination & Documentation

• Parts & Inventory Tracking: Identify required replacement parts numbers using electronic parts catalogs and coordinate with the procurement team to order stock.

• Technical Maintenance Logging: Meticulously update equipment service logs, recording work hours, parts used, repair details, and safety compliance metrics to keep the fleet audit-ready.

Job Qualifications & Requirements

• Certification: Technical diploma or vocational certification (e.g., TESDA NC II / NC III in Heavy Equipment Servicing or equivalent global mechanical certification).

• Experience: Typically 3–5+ years of hands-on experience handling major heavy equipment brands

• Technical Skills: High proficiency with air/power tools, welding equipment, hydraulic pressure gauges, and modern engine scanning software.

• Physical Fitness: Physically capable of lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), working in awkward positions (bending, kneeling, crawling under machinery), and working in outdoor field conditions (mud, heat, dust).
