Job Summary:
A Hair Assistant supports hairstylists and salon staff by assisting with various tasks related to hair care services. This includes preparing clients for services, maintaining a clean and organized salon environment, and ensuring that the stylists have the tools and products needed to perform their work. The Hair Assistant plays a vital role in enhancing the overall customer experience in the salon.
Responsibilities
- Client Preparation: Greet clients, offer refreshments, and ensure they are comfortable before services begin. Assist clients in preparing for hair treatments (e.g., washing hair, applying conditioners, or applying protective products).
- Salon Maintenance: Keep the salon clean and organized by tidying up workstations, cleaning combs, brushes, and scissors, and sanitizing equipment.
- Assisting Stylists: Help hairstylists with setting up tools and products for haircuts, coloring, and styling. Provide assistance during services, such as holding hair in place or passing tools.
- Shampooing and Conditioning: Shampoo and condition clients’ hair, ensuring a relaxing and comfortable experience. Assist with blow-drying and basic styling.
- Stocking and Inventory: Keep track of salon supplies such as shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. Restock items as needed and notify the manager when supplies are running low.
- Customer Service: Provide a positive customer experience by assisting with scheduling appointments, answering questions, and ensuring that clients are satisfied with their service.
- Laundry and Towels: Manage the salon’s laundry, including washing, drying, folding, and restocking towels and capes.
- Assisting with Hair Color: In some cases, help apply color treatments or help mix color formulas under the direction of a licensed stylist.
Qualifications
- Education: No formal education is required, but a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a salon or as a salon assistant is beneficial but not necessary. On-the-job training is often provided.
- Skills:
- Basic understanding of hair care, salon tools, and salon etiquette.
- Good communication skills to assist clients and work closely with stylists.
- Ability to multitask and remain organized in a busy salon environment.
- Excellent customer service skills, with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from hairstylists and salon managers.
Preferred Skills
- Previous experience in a customer-facing role, such as retail or hospitality.
- Knowledge of salon services and products, including hair treatments and styling techniques.
Working Conditions
- Schedule: Full-time or part-time, with flexible hours depending on the salon’s schedule. May include weekends and evenings.

- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift or move salon equipment, and assist clients comfortably.
