Job Summary
The Survey Engineer is responsible for conducting land and hydrographic surveys, establishing control points, and ensuring accurate positioning, alignment, and elevation of project works. The role includes bathymetric surveys, water depth measurement, and underwater mapping to support marine, coastal, dredging, and infrastructure projects in compliance with Philippine regulations and engineering standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Land Survey Operations
- Conduct topographic surveys
- Conduct boundary and relocation surveys
- Perform construction layout and staking
- Establish and verify benchmarks, control points, and reference lines
- Perform as-built surveys for completed works
2. Hydrographic Survey Operations
- Conduct bathymetric surveys to determine water depth and seabed profile
- Operate hydrographic equipment such as tide gauges and current meters
- Perform river, coastal, and offshore surveys
- Channel alignment and seabed mapping
- Apply tide corrections and sound velocity adjustments
- Ensure accuracy of underwater data and positioning
3. Data Processing and Analysis
- Process survey data using hydrographic software (e.g., HYPACK, QINSy, or equivalent)
- Generate bathymetric maps
- Generate contour maps and profiles
- Generate cross-sections and volume computations
- Prepare as-built and hydrographic survey reports
4. Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate and maintain Total Station, GNSS/GPS
- Operate and maintain Echo sounders and sonar systems
- Operate and maintain survey boats and related marine equipment
- Ensure proper calibration and regular maintenance
5. Construction and Marine Project Support
- Provide survey data for port and harbor construction
- Provide survey data for bridge and marine structure alignment
- Verify elevations, coordinates, and dredging limits
- Assist in resolving discrepancies between design and actual site/marine conditions
6. Coordination and Reporting
- Coordinate with Project Engineers and Marine Engineers
- Coordinate with vessel operators and survey crew
- Coordinate with contractors and subcontractors
- Submit timely and accurate survey reports and documentation
7. Compliance and Regulatory Requirements
- Ensure compliance with DENR regulations (environmental and land survey compliance)
- Ensure compliance with NAMRIA standards (hydrographic and mapping, if applicable)
- Follow company policies and project specifications
8. Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE)
- Observe safety protocols for marine and offshore operations
- Use required PPE (including life vests for marine work)
- Ensure safe operation of survey vessels and equipment
- Report hazards, incidents, or near-misses immediately
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geodetic Engineering (highly preferred), Civil Engineering or related field
License
- Registered Geodetic Engineer (RGE) – preferred
- Hydrographic survey training/certification is an advantage
Experience
- At least 2–5 years in land surveying (required) and hydrographic or marine survey (preferred)
- Experience in dredging, reclamation, or port projects is an advantage
Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of survey principles (land and hydrographic), bathymetric data collection and processing, and GIS is an advantage
- Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Hydrographic software (HYPACK, QINSy, etc.)
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong attention to accuracy and detail
- Ability to work in field and marine environments
Working Conditions
- Combination of fieldwork (land) and marine/offshore operations
- Exposure to weather conditions, waves, tides, and currents
- May require extended hours and shifting schedules
- Travel to remote project sites
