Job summary

Job Description Communications Officer

We are hiring for a Communications Officer role at the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The role is based in Manila, Philippines, on a hybrid basis. Join a dynamic Communications team working across a unique organisation that strengthens free, fair and informed societies. Through the combined power of journalism and the law, together with data intelligence and AI initiatives, the Foundation works to strengthen information integrity, protect civil society and advance responsible business practices.

Media Development

For more than 40 years, we have promoted the highest standards in journalism by training reporters around the world to cover issues relevant to their local context, accurately and impartially. Today, we work to strengthen local and national journalism, improve media ethics, standards and regulation, combat misinformation, and explore and shape the future of the profession. We do this through newsroom consultancy, journalism training and mentoring, capacity- building, and via our funding of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.

Free Legal Assistance (TrustLaw)

We run the world’s largest pro bono legal network, TrustLaw. Working with leading law firms, we facilitate free legal support, groundbreaking research and resources for civil society organisations, social enterprises and independent media. By spreading the practice of pro bono worldwide we strengthen civil society and drive social change. Our network has grown to over 7,000 members, including more than 1,000 law firms and in-house legal teams.

Convening Initiatives

We convene experts to build global awareness of critical issues linked to our areas of work, to inspire collective leadership and to help shape a prosperous world where no one is left behind. Our annual flagship event, Trust Conference, brings together leaders from civil society, media, the private sector and government who are working to strengthen democracy, protect civic space and shape responsible business practices. Other initiatives include thematic working groups convened around the world to share expertise, drive new partnerships, facilitate media coverage and produce legal research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Communications team to plan and deliver regular content for our internal channels to drive engagement and connection with our global network of staff.
  • Write communications material for both internal and external audiences, understanding complex information and tailoring it for relevant audiences.
  • Contribute to the production of creative content for the Foundation’s annual flagship event, Trust Conference, and other events as required.
  • Support senior members of the team with campaign delivery and regularly evaluate the effectiveness of comms activities.
  • Stay across sector trends and suggest new and creative approaches as needed.
  • Work with delivery and thought leadership teams to source communications content, such as human interest and impact stories, that are relevant to our audiences and strategy while swiftly and effectively actioning communications support requests from across the business.
  • Build relationships with a range of thought leadership and service delivery teams, to support programmatic communications activities and fundraising priorities.
  • Provide general communications support, including managing the enquiries inbox and drafting initial responses and supporting the team, where required, on external communications campaigns.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of campaigns around relevant international days.
Required Qualifications
  • Proven experience in integrated communications, ideally for an international organisation, the development sector or within a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong ability to write and edit a range of communications materials in a fast-paced environment, keeping audience needs and interests at the forefront of written work.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal).
  • Adept at understanding and assimilating complex information.
  • Rigorous attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy, with exceptional research and analytical skills.
  • A highly motivated self-starter with an ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Exceptional organisational skills, must be able to work across simultaneous projects led by multiple team members.
  • A strong team ethic, keen to learn new skills and share expertise.
  • The ability to work creatively, speedily and accurately under pressure and to prioritise accordingly.
  • Fluent English is essential and additional languages, an advantage.
  • A related bachelor's degree to communications or business.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Project management experience or a personal interest in social, humanitarian and/ou environmental issues (we are particularly interested to hear more about these throughout the process).

The Communications Officer role is not eligible for referral rewards.
