Job summary

Compass is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer Java (Contractor through Deel) to help design and deliver cloud-based, event-driven microservices in a startup-like engineering environment. You will work across the full real estate tech stack, improving scalability and reliability of core services.

Proven 7+ years of Java development, strong English communication, and hands-on experience with AWS/Azure/GCP, containers, and CI/CD are required. This remote role offers autonomy and global collaboration.

Qualifications

• BS in CS or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with Java.
• Fluent English is required.
• Experience designing and building cloud-based services.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience with containerization, microservices, and CI/CD.

What you will do:

• Work in a startup-like environment building agile products and services
• Design and build distributed, event-driven microservices
• Independently define, decompose, and lead delivery of complex projects
• Perform code reviews, design reviews, and write high quality tests
• Become the subject matter expert for one or more services in your domain
• Create clear and concise documentation (diagrams, service descriptions, decisions, runbooks)
• Own and operationally improve services in your domain throughout their lifecycle
• Identify and remove bottlenecks to address inefficiencies in the developer experience

What we look for:

• BS in CS or equivalent practical experience
• English fluent level is required for the role
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with Java
• hands on engineering experience leading the technical design delivery of projects requiring work from multiple engineers as well as their own coding work
• Experience designing and building cloud-based services.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-based services (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerization, microservices architecture, and continuous integration and delivery
• Experience with Scrum/Agile development methodologies
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• System Design experience hands on
• AI tools applied to development experience
