Software Engineering Manager - Desktop and Embedded

Canonical - Jobs

We work closely with major silicon companies to optimise Ubuntu for their latest hardware. As a software engineering manager, you need to bring both technical and management skills to lead your team. You will lead an engineering team working across the full Linux stack—from kernel to GUI—to optimise Ubuntu, the world's most widely used Linux desktop and server, for the latest silicon. You will also represent the team in partner engagement and ensure timely delivery of project milestones.

As an engineering manager at Canonical, your primary responsibility is to support your team: ensuring their growth as engineers, meaningful work, and a positive work environment. You will provide technical leadership, challenge, and mentorship to your team members. You will have the opportunity to influence company culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate on strategy and execution.

What you'll do
  1. Lead a team of distributed engineers to design and implement optimal Ubuntu integration for the latest IoT and server hardware platforms and software stacks.
  2. Engage with commercial partners to deliver an optimized, first-class Ubuntu experience on their platforms.
  3. Develop your team through coaching, mentoring, leading by example, and providing feedback.
  4. Oversee commercial engagements and support timely delivery of project milestones.
  5. Maintain strict quality and reliability standards.
  6. Collaborate with other teams at Canonical to align on product architecture and roadmaps.
  7. Work from home with global travel up to twice a year for up to two weeks.
Who you are
  • You have experience with Linux distributions, Debian packaging, and high-performance server hardware.
  • You have worked directly with customers, resolving technical issues, understanding business challenges, and communicating solutions effectively.
  • You have managed or led a team of software engineers.
  • You understand agile software development methodologies.
  • You collaborate effectively across teams, building trust and delivering results.
  • You possess strong communication skills in English, both written and oral.
  • You hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a technology field.
