Job summary

The Shift Manager at Oman Investment Authority leads container terminal operations on a shift, coordinating vessel, yard and gate activities to ensure safe, timely cargo movement and optimal use of resources at our port facilities.

You will guide foremen and crew, enforce safety standards, liaise with vessel masters, shipping lines and port authorities, and drive continuous improvement to meet performance targets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or diploma in Logistics, Maritime Studies, Port Management or related field.
• 8 years of experience in container terminal operations or similar logistics environment.
• Strong knowledge of container handling equipment (STS, RTG, reach stackers, etc.)
• Familiarity with Terminal Operating Systems (e.g., Navis N4) and MS Office tools.
• Proven leadership and team management skills in a fast‑paced operational environment.
• Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and decision‑making abilities.
• Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Familiarity with port safety and HSSE regulations.
• Ability to make quick operational decisions under pressure.
• Knowledge of port logistics, quay equipment operations (STS, RTG, reach stackers) and vessel handling procedures.

The Shift Manager is responsible for leading managing and coordinating all container terminal operations during an assigned shift This includes vessel operations yard management and gate activities ensuring optimal utilization of equipment labor and terminal resources The role safeguards compliance with operational plans safety standards and customer requirements while driving efficiency and productivity across the terminal The Shift Manager acts as the senior operational authority on duty making real-time decisions to address issues minimizing delays and achieve performance targets.

Key Accountabilities

• Operational Leadership: Manage and oversee all vessel, yard and gate activities during the shift. Ensure smooth coordination between quay, yard and gate operations to maintain uninterrupted cargo flow. Optimize allocation and deployment of labor, equipment and resources. Monitor operational KPIs and take corrective actions to achieve performance targets. Ensure cargo is handled without damage and in compliance with customer requirements.
• People & Team Management: Lead, guide and motivate Foremen, Supervisors and operational staff during the shift. Ensure appropriate manpower deployment in line with operational demand. Conduct performance monitoring and provide coaching to improve team efficiency. Enforce discipline, attendance and adherence to company policies within the shift team.
• Safety and Security: Ensure all operations are carried out in compliance with terminal safety, security and environmental standards. Conduct pre-shift safety briefings and enforce use of PPE across all operations. Report, investigate and follow up on incidents, accidents and near misses. Ensure compliance with ISPS, port authority and regulatory requirements. Promote a strong safety culture across the shift workforce.
• Stakeholder & Customer Engagement: Act as the primary point of contact for vessel masters, shipping line representatives and port authorities during the shift. Address customers and stakeholder concern promptly and professionally. Ensure customer service standards and contractual obligations are met.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve operational processes, productivity and resource utilization. Support the implementation of new technologies and systems. Contribute to cost control and efficiency improvement initiatives.

Working Conditions

Primarily based within the terminal, quay, yard and cargo storage areas. Exposed to outdoor conditions including heat, humidity and noise. Shift‑based role including nights, weekends, and public holidays, aligned with vessel and cargo operations. Regular walking across large operational areas, climbing vessel gangways and yard stacks and standing for extended periods. Requires alertness in high‑traffic environments with heavy equipment and moving cargo.

Mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as helmet, safety shoes, high‑visibility vest, gloves and hearing protection. High‑paced environment with tight deadlines linked to vessel turnaround and cargo delivery commitments.
