Job summary

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children in Waitākere invites applications for a Youth Justice Coordinator. Mō te tūnga | About the role:

As a Youth Justice Coordinator, you will be responsible for managing Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in accordance with the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989. You will work with tamariki and rangatahi, whānau and the wider community to address the underlying causes which have led to the offending of tamariki and rangatahi. You will be responsible for working alongside victims, the police and the Youth Court to ensure that rangatahi are held accountable and the interests of victims and the public are upheld. You will be able to incorporate a mana enhancing and restorative approach within your practice and utilise the combined knowledge of community resources, networks, and opportunities. The work you do will contribute to create an alternative offending-free future for tamariki and rangatahi. This role may require you to travel to other areas in our region.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring:

To be considered for this role, you will need to be a dynamic, agile and fast paced coordinator who has a well-developed experience in front line delivery and the ability to build strong strategic relationships. Additionally, you will have:

  • Strong community youth networks with an ability to connect and build strong trusting relationships with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, youth justice professionals, the community and victims of offending.
  • Strong facilitation skills with the ability to plan, meet timeframes identify appropriate supports and apply relevant FGC (family group conference) standards, legislation and practices throughout this process.
  • Proven experience working with youth aged between 12 to 18 years.
  • A full, clean New Zealand driver's licence(historic convictions may be considered on a case-by-case basis).
  • Ability to self-direct and manage own workload with clear communication - including strong report writing skills.
  • Ability to uphold the principles of Te tiriti ō Waitangi and demonstrating this in practice.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture.
  • A qualification in Adolescent Psychology, Criminology, Youth Development, Community Development is desirable.
