Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Southern Screenworks Ltd – Kirwee, South Island

Southern Screenworks is growing and we are looking for an experienced Workshop Manager to lead our engineering and mechanical workshop team.

Based from Aylesbury, Christchurch, this is a hands‑on leadership role looking after the workshop that keeps our mobile screening, crushing, quarrying, transport and heavy plant operations moving.

This is a rare opportunity for a capable heavy diesel, mechanical engineering workshop leader who wants good gear, a skilled crew, a well‑equipped workshop and the chance to help shape the future of a growing business.

What you’ll be doing

You will lead the day‑to‑day workshop function, including:

  • Managing workshop workflow, repairs, servicing and preventative maintenance
  • Leading, supporting and developing a skilled workshop team
  • Keeping plant, machinery, trucks, trailers and workshop equipment ready for work
  • Coordinating breakdowns, urgent repairs, parts delays and return‑to‑service priorities
  • Managing parts, stock, tools, workshop housekeeping and cost control
  • Working closely with Production, Transport, Compliance and Office Systems teams
  • Ensuring job notes, maintenance records, parts usage and workshop records are completed in approved systems
  • Maintaining strong Health & Safety and safe workshop practices

You will still be practical and hands‑on when required, but this is a genuine Workshop Manager position — not just another mechanic role with extra paperwork.

What we offer

  • Senior remuneration package for the right person
  • Work Ute and Medical insurance benefits
  • Well‑equipped workshop with a skilled and practical workshop team
  • Varied heavy plant, quarry, crushing, screening and transport gear
  • Training and career development opportunities with active support
  • Opportunity to improve systems, maintenance planning and workshop performance
  • A busy and growing business with a strong forward work programme.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for someone who knows heavy gear, understands workshop pressure, and can lead people well.

You will ideally have:

  • Strong heavy diesel, mechanical, engineering, fabrication or plant maintenance experience
  • Experience with mobile plant, trucks, trailers, quarry, civil, transport or contracting equipment
  • Proven ability to lead, supervise and/or mentor workshop staff
  • Strong fault‑finding and practical problem‑solving skills
  • Good planning and workflow control with a strong safety mindset
  • Confidence managing stock, parts, tools, supplier follow‑up and workshop costs
  • Good communication with operators, workshop staff, transport, production and management
  • Confidence using job management systems, maintenance records or workshop software
  • A practical, calm and professional approach under pressure

The opportunity

This role will suit someone who wants to relocate or step into senior workshop leadership.

You will be trusted to lead the crew, help improve workshop systems, keep the gear moving, and help build a high‑performing workshop that supports a busy mobile screening and crushing business.

If you take pride in good workmanship, safe work, well‑kept gear, strong communication and leading a solid team, then we want to hear from you.
