Job summary

Department of Conservation (DOC) in Whangārei is seeking a Ranger to deliver conservation outcomes across the Whangārei District. You’ll work in the field on tracks, facilities, and visitor assets, and support pest plant/animal control alongside volunteers and partners.

Ideal candidates have hands-on outdoor experience, carpentry or maintenance skills, and a full NZ driver’s licence (manual). The role is full-time, fixed-term through June 2027, with a strong focus on safety and collaboration.

Qualifications

• Practical outdoor work in a team environment with a can-do attitude.
• Experience in carpentry, construction, building maintenance, or related trades.
• Experience undertaking pest plant and/or pest animal control.
• Full NZ driver’s licence with ability to drive a manual.
• Desirable: Growsafe certification, GPS/ArcGIS Field Maps familiarity, First Aid.
• Understanding of risk management, hazard identification, and health & safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Ensure facilities, tracks, and signage are safe and accessible.
• Track clearing and maintenance of visitor assets.
• Contribute to conservation work programmes and field initiatives.
• Undertake pest plant and animal control.
• Support conservation projects and collaborate with partners and volunteers.
• Maintain equipment and uphold health, safety, and environmental standards.
