Job summary

WM New Zealand in East Tamaki, Auckland, is seeking a hands‑on Welder/Bin Maintainer to perform in‑house maintenance and repairs on bins and equipment. You’ll join a busy yard team keeping operations running smoothly.

Experience with MIG welding and fabrication is essential, with a safety mindset and a NZ Class 1 licence. You’ll work both in a team and independently, with a competitive hourly rate and overtime opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Experience with MIG welding and fabrication in industrial settings.
  • AS/NZS 2980 welding qualification is advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong health and safety attitude.
  • Hold a Full Class 1 New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Basic computer experience.
  • Ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • You will be setting up and operating hand tools, including gas/plasma cutting, drills and grinders, and requisitioning or repairing parts.
  • You will work closely with the Supervisor/Manager to requisition repair parts and consumables, ensuring cost‑effective use.
  • As experience develops, you may undertake general maintenance on WM fleet vehicles and compactors.
  • This fast‑paced role requires initiative, strong time management, and quick response to breakdowns and spills.
  • You will maintain paperwork, keep the workshop area and yard clean and present a professional image.

The role you’ll play.

When you join our Workshop team you are joining a team that takes pride in what they do!

Based at our workshop in East Tamaki, the role is responsible for our in‑house preventative maintenance and repairs of all types of bins and associated equipment.

Are you a hands‑on, reliable team player who takes pride in keeping operations running smoothly? We’re looking for a dedicated Welder/ Bin Maintainer to join our busy yard team and support the day‑to‑day operation of our waste management facility.

Key responsibilities
  • You will be setting up and operating hand tools, including but not limited to gas/ plasma cutting, drills and grinders, along with requisitioning or repairing parts and associated consumables.
  • You will work closely with the Supervisor/Manager to requisition repair parts and consumables, ensuring the cost‑effective use of materials within budget.
  • As your experience develops, you may also undertake general maintenance on WM fleet vehicles and compactors.
  • This is a fast‑paced role that requires initiative, strong time‑management skills, and the ability to respond quickly to breakdowns and spills, minimising downtime.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining accurate paperwork, keeping the workshop area and yard clean and organised, and upholding a professional image of the company at all times.
Qualifications

What you’ll need.

We are looking for someone with experience in MIG welding and fabrication and has used a range of engineering hand and power tools. If you hold the qualification in Welding to AS/NZS 2980 that would be a strong advantage but not essential.

  • Strong health & safety attitude is key.
  • Hold a Full Class 1 New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Basic computer experience would be great,
  • Ability to work in a team but equally on your own
  • Excellent time management.
