Job summary

WM New Zealand is seeking a hands‑on Welder/Bin Maintainer for our East Tamaki workshop. The role focuses on in‑house preventative maintenance and repairs of bins and related equipment, ensuring smooth operations and safe, compliant practices.

You will join a busy yard team, work 45 hours per week (6am–3:30pm, Mon–Fri) with overtime as needed, and contribute to a reliable waste management facility that serves local communities. No relocation required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in MIG welding and fabrication.
  • Used a range of engineering hand and power tools.
  • Welding qualification to AS/NZS 2980 is advantageous but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate hand tools including gas/plasma cutting, drills and grinders; requisition parts.
  • Work with Supervisor to requisition repair parts and consumables within budget.
  • As experience develops, undertake general maintenance on WM fleet vehicles and compactors.
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns and spills to minimise downtime.
  • Maintain paperwork and keep workshop and yard clean and organised; uphold professional image.

The role you’ll play.

When you join our Workshop team you are joining a team that takes pride in what they do!

Based at our workshop in East Tamaki, the role is responsible for our in‑house preventative maintenance and repairs of all types of bins and associated equipment.

Are you a hands‑on, reliable team player who takes pride in keeping operations running smoothly? We’re looking for a dedicated Welder/ Bin Maintainer to join our busy yard team and support the day‑to‑day operation of our waste management facility.

Key responsibilities.

  • You will be setting up and operating hand tools, including but not limited to gas/ plasma cutting, drills and grinders, along with requisitioning or repairing parts and associated consumables.
  • You will work closely with the Supervisor/Manager to requisition repair parts and consumables, ensuring the cost‑effective use of materials within budget.
  • As your experience develops, you may also undertake general maintenance on WM fleet vehicles and compactors.
  • This is a fast‑paced role that requires initiative, strong time‑management skills, and the ability to respond quickly to breakdowns and spills, minimising downtime.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining accurate paperwork, keeping the workshop area and yard clean and organised, and upholding a professional image of the company at all times.
Qualifications

What you’ll need.

We are looking for someone with experience in MIG welding and fabrication and has used a range of engineering hand and power tools. If you hold the qualification in Welding to AS/NZS 2980 that would be a strong advantage but not essential.

  • Strong health & safety attitude is key.
  • Hold a Full Class 1 New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Basic computer experience would be great,
  • Ability to work in a team but equally on your own
