In this key leadership role, you'll help ensure our critical infrastructure continues to support the Far North's growth while meeting regulatory requirements and community expectations.

Te Wero – The Challenge

We are seeking an experienced asset management professional to lead the strategic management of Council's water and wastewater infrastructure assets.

Reporting to the Manager - Asset Management, you will be responsible for developing and implementing asset management strategies, plans and programmes that optimise asset performance, manage risk and support sustainable investment decisions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development and continuous improvement of Water and Wastewater Asset Management Plans.
  • Developing asset lifecycle, renewal and investment strategies.
  • Providing technical leadership and expert asset management advice.
  • Supporting business case development and long-term infrastructure planning.
  • Overseeing asset condition assessment and performance monitoring programmes.
  • Ensuring asset information is accurate, reliable and supports effective decision-making.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supporting regulatory compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contributing to strategic planning and organisational objectives.

Additional accountabilities are:

  • Respond promptly to customer enquiries with a customer‑focused approach.
  • To act proactively to ensure no one is injured at this workplace.

Far North District Council is currently recruiting for Infrastructure roles in anticipation of ongoing service delivery needs. However, the Council is in the process of transitioning water services to a new Council Controlled Organisation (CCO). As a result, employment with Far North District Council in these roles is not guaranteed beyond the establishment of the waters CCO. While every effort will be made to support staff through this transition, successful applicants should be aware that their employment may be subject to change, transfer, or end if all other options are exhausted in accordance with legislative requirements and organisational change processes.

You’ll bring a strong background in water infrastructure asset management, combined with a passion for delivering practical, future‑focused solutions.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent engineering qualification.
  • Significant experience in water supply and wastewater asset management.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing asset management plans.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure asset lifecycle planning and renewal programmes.
  • Experience working with asset management systems, GIS, and data analytics.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • The ability to analyse complex information and translate it into practical, strategic outcomes.
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to continuous improvement.

Far North District Council are proud of our diverse workforce and are committed to maintaining an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. We are a progressive and growing council filled with like‑minded people who love what they do and are committed to providing superior services to residents and their community.

You will be given all the tools of the trade to hit the ground running.

  • Learning & Development plan to ensure your ongoing growth and success within the organisation.
  • The salary for this position is Grade 19 within Council's salary structure (Band: $111,030 to $130,623 pro rata per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
  • We operate a "Business First" approach with flexible/hybrid options.
  • Free $100,000 life insurance scheme (conditions apply).
  • Free Will package, so that if the unexpected happens your family is supported.
