Job summary

Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in Hawke's Bay (Hastings/Napier) seeks a Veterinarian (VTS2 Predictive) to provide verification and certification services at meat exporting plants. You will support meat industry standards, ensuring food safety and export compliance, with mentoring and on-site training provided.

The role involves working with meat works personnel and veterinary teams, performing ante mortem inspections, and contributing to on-farm verification while advancing to VTS roles

Qualifications

• Be a New Zealand registered Veterinarian (or able to obtain registration with VCNZ)
• Hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence (or able to obtain by converting overseas licence)
• Have verbal and written skills, and analytical reasoning skills
• Demonstrate integrity and trust, ethics and values, resilience, adaptability and openness
• Have experience persuading and influencing, teamwork, planning and organising
• Have computer literacy – able to use word processing, Excel, internet, email
• Advantageous knowledge of HACCP/Quality Assurance in Food Safety (training provided)

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders such as meat works personnel and veterinary colleagues
• Verify that requirements and procedures are followed
• Provide certification for animal meat exports
• Complete ante mortem inspections and occasionally post-mortem judgement
• Maintain knowledge within farming communities and be involved in on-farm verification
• Ensure animal welfare is maintained
