Job description

We are looking for an Unreal Software Engineer to join our internal game development team and work on an unannounced original IP.

This is an opportunity to join the project at an early stage and have a meaningful impact on how the game and its technology are built. You will work closely with the rest of the development team to design and implement gameplay features, build core systems, and solve the technical challenges that come with developing a new game from the ground up.

We are looking for an engineer with strong Unreal Engine fundamentals and a broad understanding of game development. The role will cover gameplay programming, core systems, networking, performance and general Unreal Engine development. Experience with systems such as GAS and Unreal networking is valuable, but strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to work across different areas of the project are the priority.

This role suits an engineer who enjoys working in a small team, taking ownership of problems, and having a direct influence on the direction and technical foundations of a new game.

This is a full-time fixed-term employment or contract position, with a strong preference for candidates who can work on-site from our Auckland office. For the right candidate, we may be able to support remote work within New Zealand. Please note, you must have the right to work in New Zealand to be eligible for this position.

We highly value diversity. Regardless of disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or any other aspect of your culture or identity, you have an important role to play in our team.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $100,000 or equivalent contract rate
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop gameplay features and systems in Unreal Engine.
  • Develop and maintain core gameplay systems that are performant, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Design and implement multiplayer and networked gameplay systems.
  • Work with Unreal Engine networking, replication, RPCs, relevancy, and client/server architecture.
  • Develop gameplay systems using the Gameplay Ability System (GAS), including Abilities, Attributes, Effects, and Gameplay Tags.
  • Work closely with Game Designers to turn gameplay concepts and requirements into robust technical implementations.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues, bugs, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Profile and optimise CPU, GPU, memory, networking, and gameplay performance.
  • Contribute to technical design and architectural decisions across the project.
  • Maintain high code quality standards and participate in code reviews.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation where required.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers.
Job Requirements:
  • 3+ years of professional game development experience, with significant experience using Unreal Engine.
  • Strong expertise in C++ and Unreal Engine development.
  • Strong understanding of Unreal Engine architecture, frameworks, and development practices.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing complex gameplay systems.
  • Strong understanding of gameplay programming and common game development patterns.
  • Professional experience with Unreal Engine networking and multiplayer development.
  • Strong understanding of replication, RPCs, client/server architecture, relevancy, and network performance.
  • Experience working with the Unreal Engine Gameplay Ability System (GAS).
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving complex technical and performance issues.
  • Ability to profile and optimise Unreal Engine projects across CPU, GPU, memory, and networking.
  • Strong understanding of source control systems such as Perforce.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices and tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
