Cardiology Outpatients Department Whangarei and other peripheral sites in Northland. Full-time, fixed-term position working 40 hours per week - Trainee position until February 2029. Opportunities to further enhance and develop your skills.

About the Role

The trainee Sonographer role combines part-time work with part-study (Post Graduate Diploma Health Science in Ultrasound), undertaken through the University of Auckland (UoA) across 2 academic years. There is a requirement for self-directed study in your own time to meet the course requirements, study time within hours will be provided as per the collective agreement.

Te Tai Tokerau provides a highly supportive learning environment that fosters professional development and education. Initial training will be undertaken in Te Toka Tumai Auckland, for a period of 6-12 months before continuing your training in Te Tai Tokerau.

As a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer, you will receive comprehensive clinical training while working alongside experienced clinicians. Your role will include:

  • Performing adult transthoracic echocardiography under supervision.
  • Assisting with transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) procedures.
  • Developing the knowledge and practical skills required to become a qualified Cardiac Sonographer.

These trainee positions are rarely available and highly sought after. So, if you have a Bachelors level science or health science degree suitable for registration with the Medical Radiation Technologist Board (MRTB) and the drive and determination to succeed then we want to hear from you.

This training position involves gaining a post graduate level qualification through the UoA - by both distance learning, attendance of residential block courses and through on the job training. The academic pathway will be confirmed at time of enrolment.

Note, candidates who hold New Zealand (NZ) residency (rather than citizenship) will only have access to the UoA academic pathway (subject to recognition of suitable undergraduate degree). To be eligible for enrolment in the qualification you must be a NZ citizen or NZ resident (including citizens of the Cook Islands, Tokelau, and Niue) or an Australian citizen.

The successful applicant must be available to commence employment in November/December 2026, with postgraduate study commencing in March 2027 (subject to university enrolment dates).

About the Team/Service/Location

We have an opportunity for a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer to join our Cardiology team in Te Tai Tokerau. Become part of a rapidly developing Cardiology service in a beautiful part of the country offering work, rest, and play all in one package.

We are driven to develop a strong and supportive team utilising current best practice. We have Three Qualified Reporting Sonographers as well as two Trainee Sonographer currently working within Cardiology Outpatients across the district. This team is supported by our own Cardiology team with initial training support provided by Te Toka Tumai.

About you

As a Trainee Cardiac Sonographer, you must demonstrate well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and an understanding of patients needs as well as an ability to use initiative with proven time management skills.

Possess an appropriate prerequisite educational qualification such as a medical science qualification at BSc or equivalent level which is acceptable to Auckland University.

Two years postgraduate experience in a health care setting with responsibility for patient care.

Previous experience in ultrasound and/or Part 1 DMU or University papers in ultrasound is advantageous.
