Job summary

Starship Child Health in Auckland seeks an experienced Cardiac Theatre Nurse to join its paediatric perioperative team. This role focuses on delivering safe, high-quality cardiac surgical care for tamariki and their whānau, within a dedicated paediatric operating suite.

The position requires 2+ years in OR nursing with cardiac surgery experience, registration with NZ Nursing Council (or eligibility), and a collaborative, culturally aware approach to care.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of Operating Room experience essential for paediatric cardiac surgery.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to improving Maori health outcomes and embedding Te Tiriti.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, high-quality cardiac perioperative care for tamariki in paediatric operating theatres.
  • Work within Starship Child Health's paediatric cardiac service to support surgical care delivery.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses to optimise patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement and family-centred care.

About the role

Our Paediatric Perioperative Cardiac Service has an exciting and innovative opportunity for an experienced Cardiac Theatre Nurse to join our dedicated team at Starship Child Health.

This is a unique opportunity as we establish direct recruitment into the Paediatric Cardiac Operating Rooms under Starship Child Health.

You will play an important role in supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality, whānau-centred cardiac surgical care for tamariki and their families.

This is more than an opportunity to join a theatre team it is an opportunity to help shape a new chapter in paediatric cardiac care at Starship Child Health.

About the Team

Our Paediatric Operating Rooms at Starship Child Health provides Acute Emergency Trauma and elective surgical procedures in the paediatric specialties of General, Complex Neonatal, Thoracic, Urology, Endoscopy, Oncology, ORL, head and Neck, Dental, Spinal, Orthopaedics, Sarcoma, Plastics and Cardiac, including paediatric cardiac transplant and Adult Congenital cardiac services.

This is an exciting time of change and opportunity to deliver a mokopuna and whanau centric paediatric cardiac service.

About you

As the ideal person for this role, you will:

  • Either have or be eligible for registration with NZ Nursing Council.
  • Be an experienced Perioperative Nurse with 2+ years of Operating Room experience with an extensive range of Theatre Nursing skills. Experience in cardiac surgery is essential
  • Ability to develop collaborative working partnerships across a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to improving Maori health outcomes and embedding Te Tiriti
  • Have a passion for paediatric perioperative cardiac nursing
  • Have a strong commitment to quality healthcare
