Job summary

Starship Child Health in Auckland is seeking a Senior Medical Officer or Paediatric Advanced Trainee for Te Puaruruhau, the child protection service. This permanent role offers full-time or part-time arrangements and involves multidisciplinary collaboration across inpatient, day patient and clinic settings.

You will contribute to clinical care, teaching, research, administration and service development within a national paediatric health network.

Qualifications

  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (unconditional) as a specialist paediatrician, or eligibility for such registration.
  • Current Annual Practising Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Significant experience in child protection paediatrics.
  • Commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori.

About the role

We have an outstanding opportunity for permanent full-time or part-time role(s) available at Te Puaruruhau, Starship Childrens Child Protection Service.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in an inpatient/ day patient /clinic setting and to collaborate in the multi-disciplinary and multi-agency processes which are central to effective child protection practice. You will be involved in provision of clinical care, teaching and research, administration, service delivery and professional development.

Paediatricians in Te Puaruruhau provide a wide range of health-based child protection services to tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau across Auckland and Aotearoa. This includes acute inpatient and outpatient assessments, 24/7 after-hours call, services to tamariki and rangatahi engaged in statutory child protection processes (Gateway assessments), participation in Family Group Conferences and legal proceedings, peer review, teaching, quality-improvement and research.

We are interested in recruiting experienced practitioners as well those motivated to develop expertise in this area of work. We are open to discuss opportunities with Advanced Paediatric Trainees, as well as senior medical officers interested in a combined role alongside other Paediatric services. About the Team/Service/Location

At Te Toka Tumai | Starship Child Health is the national provider of tertiary child health care in New Zealand and the South Pacific, providing world-class inpatient, outpatient, trauma, emergency, and urgent care to children and their whānau. We aim to be a national centre of excellence in child health care.

Te Puaruruhau is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in multi-disciplinary health-based child protection service for Starship Child Health. We are co-located with the Te Toka Tumai Family Violence Team, Power to Protect (the National Shaken Baby Prevention Program), Police and Oranga Tamariki in Puāwaitahi, a unique multi-agency partnership at 99 Grafton Road, central Auckland, across the road from Starship Childrens Hospital. Here, all agencies work together to address the child protection needs of some of the most vulnerable tamariki and rangatahi in Aotearoa.

About you

The successful applicant will have a fantastic opportunity to contribute and gain experience and expertise in a broad range of child protection practice and to work in close collaboration with Oranga Tamariki and the Police. If necessary, further training and skilled supervision can be provided in our dynamic, experienced and highly supportive multi-disciplinary and multi-agency team.

You will have:

  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (without conditions) as a specialist paediatrician, or eligibility for such registration
  • Current Annual Practising Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Significant experience in child protection paediatrics
  • A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
