Job summary

The New Zealand Intelligence Community is seeking a Technical Analyst to tackle complex technical challenges within the Technology and Data Directorate. You will apply high-end data science techniques to extract critical intelligence and protect New Zealand and its people.

You will develop new tools, maintain high‑performance dataflows, and push the boundaries of analytic methods while mentoring others in the team.

Qualifications

  • You hold a degree in a technical field (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Math, or Stats).
  • You have specialist expertise in data science, analysis, or software engineering.
  • You understand AI technologies and can deploy new tools for large datasets.
  • You possess strong analytical rigour and are capable of synthesis from fragmented sources.
  • You have hands-on experience with data pipelines and modern infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Solve complex puzzles using advanced data analysis to generate intelligence leads.
  • Build and refine tools and tradecraft to interpret data more effectively.
  • Design, build and maintain high-performance dataflows across NZIC.
  • Drive innovation by developing new analytic techniques.
  • Upskill the team by sharing discoveries and mentoring others.

Do you have a passion for uncovering the unknown? As a Technical Analyst, you will tackle some of the most complex technical challenges facing the New Zealand Intelligence Community. Working within the Technology and Data Directorate, you will use high-end data science techniques to find the "needle in the haystack" that protects our national security.

This isn't a routine data job. You will be expected to operate at the edge of your expertise, venturing into novel and technically demanding environments to develop new tools and pioneer new ways of interpreting data.

What you will do:
  • Solve Complex Puzzles: Use advanced data analysis to dissect technical information and generate critical intelligence leads.
  • Build the Toolkit: Create and refine the tools and tradecraft that enable us to collect and interpret data more effectively.
  • Keep the data flowing: Design, build and maintain high-performance dataflows across the NZIC, diagnosing and fixing interruptions in real time
  • Drive Innovation: Constantly push the boundaries of your technical knowledge to develop cutting-edge analytic techniques.
  • Upskill the Team: Act as a subject matter expert, sharing your discoveries and training the broader analytic community in new methodologies.

Your Toolkit:
  • Technical Mastery: You hold a degree in a technical field (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Math, or Stats) and possess specialist expertise in data science, analysis, or software engineering.
  • AI & Innovation: You have a strong grasp of dominant and emerging AI technologies and the ability to build and deploy new tools to handle large, diverse datasets.
  • Analytical Rigour: You are a critical thinker who can synthesise information from fragmented sources to reach sound, logical conclusions.
  • System Dexterity: You’ll have hands-on expertise in data-pipeline or data engineering tools and experience with modern infrastructure and container orchestration.
  • Agile Mindset: You exercise sound judgment and initiative in fast-paced, dynamic operational environments.
  • Collaborative Communicator: You can translate complex technical findings into clear insights for diverse audiences and enjoy mentoring others in new techniques.
  • Global Perspective: You have a keen interest in international politics, economics, and security affairs.

The expected appointing range for this position is:

  • $73,684 - $78,596 (F)
  • $103,009 - $109,876 (H)
  • $120,359 - 128,383 (I)

Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.

You must:

  • Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years

OR

Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years

  • Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
  • Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
