About Our Team / Mō Te Tīma

The Physics Department at the University of Otago was the first Physics Department established in New Zealand, and a foundation discipline when the University opened in 1871.

Today, the Department embraces innovative teaching methods, promotes a vigorous research ethos, and is committed both to Physics as a discipline and to its applications. The role / Te mahi

As a Teaching Fellow within our Department, your focus will be supporting the running of HSFY PHSI191 labs, undertake 100 level demonstrator coordination, and lead school outreach activities.

The key tasks of the role will include:

  • Supervising 100-level labs and providing tutorial support.
  • Undertake 100-level demonstrator coordination.
  • Develop and deliver department outreach activities for schools and teachers.
  • Coordinating assessment marking and ensuring the provision of constructive and timely feedback to students.
  • Supporting other undergraduate teaching in physics as required.

Ideally, candidates will have:

  • Demonstrated relevant teaching experience at a tertiary or secondary institution.
  • Demonstrated innovation in hands on learning opportunities.
  • An ability to relate to a wide variety of people within a teaching, outreach and research environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication.
  • Commitment to working in a culturally safe and respectful manner and demonstrated understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and Pasifika values.
  • An ability to work collegially and independently.

This is a full time (1FTE), permanent position, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate step on the Teaching and Professional Practice Fellow salary scale $75,727 to $87,849 based on skills, qualifications and experience.
