Sociology, Gender Studies and Criminology is a vibrant multidisciplinary Programme, forming the largest academic unit in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Otago. To build on our success, we are seeking to appoint a Teaching Fellow to join our team in February 2026.

The role/Te mahi

We are looking for a Teaching Fellow to join our growing Criminology team. The successful candidate will contribute to our core Criminology curriculum, in particular:


  • CRIM101: Crime, Deviance and Social Transformation
  • CRIM201: Crime, Justice and Society
  • CRIM236: The Treaty and Social Services
  • CRIM301: Theories of Punishment


In this role you will work together with Criminology staff to deliver lectures and tutorials, coordinate tutors, mark internal assessment and final exams, develop course material, and contribute to paper coordination, administration, and data management.

The role will include pastoral care and advising for students at all levels. The role may also include contributing to Sociology and Gender Studies teaching. To contribute to our programme’s postgraduate research culture, the successful candidate will supervise Honours and coursework Masters dissertation projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to:


  • Have a track record in successful teaching at the tertiary level.
  • Hold or be working towards a relevant postgraduate qualification and/or teaching qualification.
  • Have experience working with learning management systems.
  • Hold an appreciation for tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori, and Pasifika knowledge, practices, and understandings.


Expertise in Criminology and/or Criminal Justice and/or Sociology or a closely related discipline is desired.

This is a full-time (1.0FTE) permanent position, based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The appointment range is $75,727 to $102,900 per annum.
