Job description

Join a high profile public sector organisation in Wellington as a Systems and Financial Accountant. Optimise financial systems (TechnologyOne), support audits, and providing expert advice. Ideal for collaborative professional who values knowledge sharing and team support. Flexible work options available.

As a Systems and Financial Accountant, you will be entrusted with safeguarding the accuracy and reliability of critical financial systems while championing continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency. Your day-to-day responsibilities will see you collaborating closely with colleagues across various departments—delivering expert guidance on system usage, providing tailored training sessions, preparing essential reports for Treasury submissions, and supporting audit processes. You will also play an instrumental role in developing robust procedures that underpin financial reporting obligations while proactively identifying opportunities for process refinement. By nurturing strong relationships with internal stakeholders and demonstrating a customer-focused approach to service delivery, you will help ensure that all financial information provided is timely, relevant, and aligned with statutory requirements. Your ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously—while remaining attentive to detail—will be key to your success in this influential position.

  • Maintain the integrity and stability of the financial management information system (FMIS), ensuring all data is accurate, secure, and up-to-date for internal and external use.
  • Lead ongoing enhancements to financial systems and associated business processes by identifying areas for optimisation and implementing best practice solutions.
  • Provide comprehensive training to finance team members and other staff on FMIS procedures, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Prepare timely, complete, and accurate monthly external reports for Treasury under the guidance of the Manager Finance, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards.
  • Offer expert advice on financial systems to project managers regarding potential impacts of system changes on FMIS operations.
  • Support budget managers in preparing business cases, budget bids, and financial analyses as required for effective resource planning.
  • Assist in meeting ex-ante and ex-post financial reporting requirements by compiling data for accountability documents such as annual reports, statements of intent, and forecasts.
  • Administer FMIS reporting systems to ensure they are structured appropriately to achieve organisational objectives while supporting wider finance group activities.
  • Identify work priorities within projects, anticipate risks or issues, and adjust plans accordingly to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Promote sound health and safety practices by applying organisational policies throughout all aspects of your work.

What you bring:

To excel as a Systems and Financial Accountant in this environment, you will bring substantial experience working with sophisticated financial management information systems—ideally gained within the public sector or similarly regulated environments. Your background should include hands-on involvement in preparing statutory reports for external agencies such as Treasury or Audit NZ alongside proven expertise in interpreting complex accounting standards. You will have developed strong communication skills that enable you to translate technical requirements into accessible guidance for colleagues at all levels. A collaborative mindset is essential; you thrive when working as part of a team dedicated to achieving shared goals while supporting others’ growth through training initiatives. Your attention to detail ensures that every report produced meets exacting standards for accuracy while your proactive approach allows you to identify opportunities for streamlining existing processes. Familiarity with contract management principles—as well as an appreciation for robust health and safety practices—will further strengthen your candidacy.

  • Demonstrated experience administering complex financial management information systems (FMIS) within a large organisation or government setting.
  • Proven track record in delivering accurate external reporting in accordance with GAAP, NZ IFRS, Cabinet/Treasury instructions, or similar regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to provide insightful financial analysis, risk identification, and practical recommendations for process improvement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills enabling you to deliver effective training sessions and communicate technical concepts clearly to non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience supporting budget preparation processes—including business case development—and providing high-quality advice to senior managers or budget holders.
  • Ability to contribute meaningfully to larger projects by managing small-to-medium contracts or project work streams using established methodologies.
  • Sound understanding of procurement processes, contract management systems, and performance measurement techniques relevant to public sector finance functions.
  • Capacity to identify project priorities within your area of responsibility while anticipating risks or challenges that may arise during implementation phases.
  • Commitment to promoting health and safety best practices through consistent application of organisational policies in daily activities.
