Job summary

Stats NZ in Wellington is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to design, implement, and operate reliable, scalable infrastructure. The role focuses on IaC, distributed systems, and ensuring secure, well-governed services for both BAU and project work.

You will join Technology Services Analytics, reporting to the Manager – Technology Delivery, collaborating with analyst developers and engineers to deliver high-quality data and services while maintaining system integrity.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Windows, IIS, SQL Server, and Active Directory/Entra.
  • Proficiency with Terraform for IaC and scripting languages (Bash/PowerShell).
  • Proficient in Python and code-analysis tools such as SonarQube.
  • Experience with Grafana for monitoring and Databricks/R for data analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, test, maintain, and monitor systems with minimal supervision.
  • Provide operational support, define metrics, optimize services, and support capacity planning.
  • Participate in system upgrades and migrations.
  • Manage changes, incidents, service requests, and work items effectively.
  • Balance cost, customer experience, reliability, scalability, and sustainability.
  • Contribute to documentation and operational procedures.
  • Follow governance, security, and operational standards.
  • Build trusted relationships through clear, open communication.
  • Audit systems to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Analyse code using a code-analysis tool.
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, platforms, and approaches.
  • Continuously develop your own technical knowledge.

You might be an intermediate systems engineer who enjoys programming, or an analyst developer keen to build on your systems engineering experience.

We’d value your knowledge of:

  • Complex distributed systems in always‑available environments
  • Infrastructure cost controls, versioning, provisioning, security, governance, logging, monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting
  • CI/CD automated pipelines
  • Code analysis and patch management

You’ll be welcomed into Technology Services Analytics, reporting to the Manager – Technology Delivery. Together with analyst developers and systems engineers, you’ll help deliver safe, reliable, and scalable services, supporting both BAU and project work while protecting system and data integrity.

Starting salary for this position:$84,027- $113,683+kiwisaver
